Harmonic Balancer Question

Post by Notanexit92 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 6:35 pm

Since I bought the 2000 ES, there has been this wierd sound coming from the timing belt area. Most specifically the Harmonic Balancer area. It sounds like it's pumping air through a hose (literally), and it does not seem to be on correctly because it wobbles while it's spinning. Also while I had it on jacks earlier, I was cranking the engine over with a wrench and there was resistance while turning it, it would spin freely for the most part, then it would come to an area where it was harder to turn, then free up again. It's also eating the alternator belt alittle, it's getting rough on one edge.

That is the pistons coming up on the compression stroke.

The elastomeric ring on the balancer may be going bad. It could separate completely, and the belts may be the only thing holding it in place, if it doesn't take it's own path. Which may not be pretty.

Yes, changing to a UDP will solve the problem if your your factory balancer is going bad. UDP's usually do not have the elastomeric ring.
