Vibration in front....

Post by bennettmotorsports » Tue Sep 13, 2011 8:02 pm

I have a 2000 Plymouth. I ma trying to get some ideas to maybe narrow this down. My front drive side seemed to vibrate a bit when I hit the brakes. I bought new pads and installed them and checked the rotors and calipers all of which seemed fine. Now with the new pads the front end shakes really bad when applying braking pressure no matter how much. It seems if I really slam on the brakes hard it does not do it. But I am talking hard enough to lock the wheels up.

I am wondering if it might be a rotor, caliper, tie rod end or even strut. If I let off the steering wheel while doing highway speeds there is very little movement in the steering wheel. No more than I would think would be normal. Also sometimes if I hit a good bump I will hear a dull thud from the front driver side. Which leads me to think it might be a strut. I have jacked it up and all appears to be fine physically and visually.

The rotors are prolly warped. If it only shakes with the brakes applied, it doesn't leave much else. New rotors are about the only solution. Turning them will not help once they have warped. They will warp again very quickly if you brake hard at all.

Rotors should be turned with at least a clean up pass to remove any glaze/rust so the new pads bed in faster/better. A clean up pass would have confirmed the rotors were warped/not useable.

I actually bought new rotors for the front tonight. Didn't have enough daylight to get them installed. That's on tap for tomorrow. This is my service car that I put 1000+ miles a week on and don't want to chance the front wheel falling off.
