steering wheel shake

Post by g_force58 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 1:27 pm

Finally the mystery of my shaking steering wheel is solved. Had the wife drive the Neon on the interstate and I followed in her car. The right front wheel was shaking like crazy at 70 mph. Took it to the tire shop and had them check it on the force balancer. Balance was good but they said I had a bad wheel. They put it in the other balancer and spun it while we watched, and indeed the wheel had an obvious wobble. They set up a micrometer to check the runout and found it had nearly 1/4 inch runout. I don't remember running over a curb or anything and the wheels have "0" curb rash so I don't know the cause. I am not the only one that drives it and can't vouch for the wife, but she can't remember hitting anything either. My hat is off to a very helpful tire shop and I would send anyone to them. Yeah, you just happen the be the unlucky person to get a faulty wheel, it happens. At least you found the problem before spending retarded amounts of money to fix other things.
