New to Second Gen

Post by turbodave » Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:01 pm

Just wanted to introduce myself, bought an 01 R/T last month.

I'm in the Chicago area and those that have been out to local shows may know me from some of my 80's Turbo cars (Red 89 Shadow Comp Pkg, or DC intercooled GLH among others.

I've had a first gen coupe as a daily driver for the last 5 years and it served me well, decided I wanted to spoil myself this year with a luxury car so I picked up this 01 R/T from a friend. 106k miles and pretty much stock with the exception of a K&N filter, Mopar Cruise, and carpet under the decklid. I had to do a few things to the car but it was well kept by the previous owner.

Car was owned by MoparMarc's brother, so if you know Marc with the red Motorsports R/T in the area this is it's twin, actually was built right before his (the VIN's are sequential).

I'm a director of the Shelby Dodge Auto Club and Secretary of the Chicagoland Mopar Connection, so if your interested in meeting other people that love fwd Mopars or you want to know what events to get your neon out to feel free to ask me.

Thanks,
Dave

damn, talk about timing! We were JUST talking about Mopar Marc and this car in a thread yesterday  IIRC this particular Motorsport Edition R/T you own is extremely rare. This is your daily driver??

Thanks for the positive comments everyone, the car is my daily driver right now. Trying to keep it nice.

Hoping to get time to replace the timing belt and water pump soon (preventative) as well as figure out a leak from the trans and see why the active intake seems to work intermittently. Also need to replace the ABS pump. Overall it's been a great car so far.

I miss the fuel mileage of my 95 however, that car was 35mpg all day on crap gas and this R/T has been averaging about 29 in the same driving conditions on premium.

The 2nd Gen feels like a much newer car than my 95, I enjoy the creature comforts like keyless entry, A/C, a working left turn signal and speedometer..

not sure how familiar you are with the cycles of the intake manifold so i'll go through it with you and you can let us know if yours is different.

at WOT conditions ONLY the butterflies open below 3k RPM's, then close untill 5k RPM's where they open again till redline.

:) 2nd Gen cars are heavier with greatly improved ergonomics. When I bought my first Neon, I test drove both 1999 model and 2000 model used cars.
I bought the 2000 model for more comfort, the difference in price was worth it.

Yep that's how it worked a few weeks ago when I got the car, last few weeks sometimes I hear it sometimes I don't. I've got an open K&N filter on it, so you can't miss the Whooomp sound at 5k when it works.

Edit: think I may have figured it out, since it only works at WOT, problem started right after I installed a nice set of thick rubber floor mats to protect the carpet. I'm betting the mat is preventing me from getting the throttle all the way open...

Wait, are you the "turbodave" that originally wrote up the info for making the adapter to stick the 8-valve turbo distributor onto a newer DOHC head? If so, all these youngins on here need to know they're talking to a celebrity!
