i would take a guess at it being the connector for an automatic trans car.

There would be a safety switch and lighting. Can't remember if Neons have that or not.

That's the plug for the illumination on the automatic Neons. It lights the PRNDL letters up

I thought that connector was located by the shifter? This one is back by the parking brake.

Hmmm....you may be right. My SRT has the plug too with nothing attached to it.

Edit: What I could find for the circuits.
F15 Fused ignition output - Fuse 9 LHD, Fuse 12 RHD, inside fuse box
D25 PCI Bus
Z6 ground
Z8 ?
A120 ?

So, you have 12 volts, and a PCI link. You could mount your Nav head unit in the console.

OK, going back up to the pic, there are only those three wires anyways, so Z8 and A120 don't matter.

Ah, that answers it. I was thinking it had to be airbag related since it has the purple pci bus wire.

lol, I'm curious now. I had my console out not too long ago, and don't remember even seeing that wire.

btw - the usual 4-speed-shifter has a light but is hard-wired with no connector. The autostick-shifter is illuminated by a LED and does have a connector...

The socket is there for a light under the MTX console. (not used oem) It works great for adding dimmable lighting to the cup holders, or whatever you choose. Not sure why it would be different for the ATX, unless I am not understanding your post completely.

That was a response to Gnuseup about the shifter lighting, not the original topic. :D
