Dimming lights

Post by Johny » Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:08 pm

So recently noticed that upon start up my dome light dims like crazy. I don't recall it being this bad before, maybe cause it's extremely cold now? Als,o all other lights seem to dim when pressing the break, or having the hazard lights on. Lights will dim when the hazards go on, then go back to normal when theyre off, and repeat.

This past summer I made sure the grounds were in contact with unpainted metal, even sanded it down to be 100%.

Any ideas? Battery? Thanks

Make your your negative battery cable is tightened?

Sounds like alternator to me from previous problems I had, but doesn't mean by any means it is.

If you got some time go to AutoZone and have them test your battery and alternator just to be sure and give you some peace of mind, or if you got a multimeter try it on the battery, should read 13.4 volts IIRC.

Yeah the negative is well on there. I think it might actually be the alternator. I'll test the voltage tomorrow

thanks

Tighten your battery cables. This happened to me the other day. Battery light came on.

Also, make sure they are not corroded. If so, pour baking soda and water or coke on the terminals and wait to dry.

Take it to Advance or AZ and get them to do a battery load test AND check the alternator. They do it for free. Last time my car did this it was a weak battery.

take it to a couple places to have it tested, not just one. last year my dad's liberty was acting weird so i had it tested at a AZ and they said the battery and the alt were bad. another AZ said it was the alt and advanced said it was both as well. turned out to just be a bad battery.

Did you put dielectric grease on the bare metal and clean terminals so no corrosion would set in?

If your battery test good it could just be the cold and how much power your starter draws since you said it was on start up, but for sure have your battery tested.

Then no that's actually pretty good, I would still have the battery actually tested but if it test good I wouldn't worry about it mine has done the same thing since winter hit its just the draw the starter has on the battery
