Need cam advice
Need cam advice
I have a 2001 ES with my DIY autozone CAI, full exhaust system, MSD coil and plug wires and NGK iridium plugs, also it's a 3 speed auto, now that u know what I'm workin with here's the question. I'm interested in camming this bad boy. Wanna have more fun. I've been looking at the crane 12. Would the lift and duration be too long? Like would it cause the piston to hit a valve? Also, would I need to get the valve springs or could I re-use my stock ones. Thanks guys. I do appreciate it.

Crane 12 won't give you any clearance issues but if your wanting a little better cam get the comp 400 more aggressive then the 12 but more street friendly then the 14. I would do your springs though your already there and think of it as insurance.

for an auto car i'd stick with the crane 12 or the comp 200, they will work better with your rpm range

i forgot to mention if you do end up going with a crane 12 or comp 200 stock valve springs/retainers are fine

I have a '01 Magnum cam forsale which isn't much smaller than the Crane 12. I just sold my Crane 12 a couple of days ago. I also have a Comp 400 forsale. Here is a chart for comparison of lift and duration.

it wouldnt be a good match for an auto since most gains with the 400 are above 5k, which an atx is not going to stay in that powerband. stick with the comp 200 or crane 12

By that logic, it wouldn't be good for a daily MTX either. Normal driving, I rarely see over 5000 rpm. I think it will be almost as good a match as with an MTX car. (As with most bolt ons) A lot of folks are happy with the 400.

i fail to see your logic either, just because you're daily driving it doesnt mean anything. to get the most power out of the cam it must rev above 5k. An atx simply isnt going to stay in that power range between shifts. he could slap the 400 in there sure, itll drive just fine DD, but hes never going to get the potential out of that cam with an ATX. SO what's the point in having it? Use a cam made for the powerband hes going to spend 90% of his time in with an atx.

I could regularly, and easily hit 5000 rpm with my 41te equipped Sundance. If the engine is putting out more power, it will also stall the TC at a higher rpm. It is not a fixed value.
My point was more that you are not going to drive around at that rpm constantly, with either transaxle, unless you are just using it for drag racing.

hes also using a 3spd not a 4spd atx, so the rpms really dip inbetween shifts. i realize hes not going to be at that rpm all the time, my point is for his useable powerband it just doesnt make sense to use a 400.occasional demons wrote:I could regularly, and easily hit 5000 rpm with my 41te equipped Sundance. Comp 200
Comp 400HYDRAULIC-For use with stock Neon cylinder heads. More power throughout and substantial gains above 5000 RPM.
As long as the power throughout is better on the 400, it is still a better choice. 300 rpm isn't going to make much difference. The stock IM is going to make better velocity with the 400, improving the mid range. it still comes down to what is used in combination with the cam. An R/t head with a short runner IM, yeah, a 3 speed might have some issues with. Remember, a 3 speed ATX will out preform a 3 speed MTX, just due to the TC alone.HYDRAULIC ROLLER-For use with Neon RT or ported cylinder heads. More power throughout and substantial gians above 5300 RPM

I dissagree, I got better gains throughout the stock power band with my comp 400. It actually made my car much better for highway driving as the tq range really picks up around 2800-3500 rpms.r/tguy02 wrote:it wouldnt be a good match for an auto since most gains with the 400 are above 5k, which an atx is not going to stay in that powerband. stick with the comp 200 or crane 12

Exactly my point. I knew there would be ppl out there that run a 400 with an ATX.
There is much more to it than the peak power range of the cam. ATX's are more friendly to mods due to the TC changing the stall speed with power input. They are more flexible than an MTX because of that alone. Are you going to see the same power to the wheels? Most likely not, just as with any ATX to MTX comparison. But to totally give up, just because it is an ATX, is just cheating yourself.
Once you get to a certain torque output, depending on the FD ratio of the MTX, the 41te will be equal in power to the wheels. This has been proven in the P body platform. I have street raced my ATX against an MTX and vice versa (I owned both, same engine) there is no edge with either one. both had the same rate of acceleration, both topped out at the same speed. Both would smoke the tires for about the same distance.

I'm not comparing a 400 to stock, obviously it's going to have gains, simple logic, I'm saying a 200 would perform better than a 400 in an atx. Completely missing my point here guys...

I honestly didn't think I would cause this much controversy. I see where both of u guys are coming from. I think in my opinion that the 400 would be a good choice for my car. It gives me a wider range for my powerband. So if I do have the occasional race or wanna f around a little bit I can have more fun. I believe I will be choosing the 400. I do appreciate the feedback by the way. I enjoy hearing, well seeing your opinions

Even the advertised specs of the 400 are not a huge difference over the 200. It is mainly in the valve lift, which really isn't as big of a game changer as duration for low and midrange power loss. If it was closer to the 14 with actual overlap, that is where the ATX/MTX potential comes in.
The 400 is still a zero overlap cam. Low RPM cylinder pressure is not going to be a big factor like large overlap cams that need the upper RPM's to bring the dynamic compression up. I bet the 400 makes more power at the low midrange to 5000 rpm than the 200 does. Even if it is 1 to 5 hp, it is still a gain.
Like I said with the standard head/IM, it is only going to increase the intake velocity, which will help the torque. You may not see as much over the 6000 rpm mark, as a Magnum head/IM, but the lower RPM's will still benefit.
