P0340 but some other details

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

P0340 but some other details

Post by Johny » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:19 pm

So, today driving about 60km/h I got a CEL. Car started to bog down, so I pulled over and checked for codes. Got the P0340, and went on to class. I know this is the camshaft pos sensor, but could the timing belt have something to do with this? I ask this because last night on my way to my lecture, I ran over a small puddle and shortly after I heard an eery screech coming from, what I guess was, the belt. It only lasted for about a second or two then it was gone.

Am I over thinking this? Should I just go get a new CPS? Thanks

It was prolly the alternator belt squealing. You would need some serious water to get to the timing belt, and it wouldn't slip from that.

This is assuming you have all the timing covers in place.

viewtopic.php?t=60274 prolly could have bumped that thread, oh well.

PS, what are the downsides of driving with a malfunctioning CPS for a couple of days? I can actually grab one from my parts car but its exam season, and I need as much time to study hahaha

You could have no problems or you could have a car that will barely turn over and not want to go above 5 MPH. Just depends what kind of mood the sensor or wiring, whichever is bad, is in.

Yeah well usually after the initial cel, the car bogs. But after turning it off and starting back up again, it seems fine

I would just replace it asap and call it done. otherwise you may be headed somewhere and be kicked into limp mode pretty much without warning, and thats no fun.

Or it will just die, at 40º below. C or F you decide.

You should just replace it either way. I've had two fail and replaced one just for piece of mind because Chrysler paid for the part.

Long long story required me spending over $1,500 at the stealer to fix my car that kept on going limp when driving. I fixed it in my driveway and got all my money back and a few extra parts by talking with Chrysler corporate. :) !!!!

I've had the same problem and it sucks cause it just happens randomly. I have had to replace 2 of them so far and since the last one it has been running smooth. I would fix it sooner than later and its pretty easy fix should only lake 30min- 1hr.
