Intermit rough starting

Post by daver » Wed Jan 11, 2006 4:12 pm

01 R/T, only mods are AEM intake, 60m tb, UPD. Plugs are now new NGK, Magnecore wires.

Occasionally car cranks strong, but no fire. Usually at this point I stop and try it again. Does the same thing, so I continued cranking, pump the gas pedal while cranking and the car starts. Depending on how much throttle the car was being given at the time, it has kinda sputtered to a start as well, but mostly if I crank it pumping the gas pedal it starts right up.

Most of the time the car fires right up first try without even touching the gas pedal.

Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it occurs, car has sat for a week and fired right up and I've gone into a store and come out 20mins later and it does the cranking thing.

No codes, no cel.

Just installed the new NGK's, and I have a new cam position sensor I could pop on. I would say it seems like a sensor isn't registering correctly causing either a no fuel or no spark situation. Not sure how pumping the throttle would affect this but when I do the car starts right up.

I have tried cranking without pumping the gas and the car just keeps cranking. Only seems to start when I pump the throttle.

Any thoughts?

I had something just like that start happening in my Jeep and about a month later the fuel pump failed. Of course that was after I replaced every ignition component, 2 sensors, and un installed my remote start thinking it could be the problem.... If you can get ahold of a fuel pressure gauge and test it when the problem is happening you could identify if this is your problem.

what could cause no fuel pump

Post by daver » Sat Jan 14, 2006 3:57 pm

Any ideas what electrical components could cause the fuel pump to not prime when inititally powering on the car?

I hopped in today and the car just cranked again. I stopped cranking, keyed the car off, and then back on again, and positively heard the fuel pump prime.

Turn the key again and started right up.

So the question is, what electrical components could cause the fuel pump not to prime when the power is keyed on?

I would think either the ASD relay, or the fuel pump relay.

Without the ASD relay, the car shouldn't even crank or spark so that makes me want to look at the fuel pump relay.

Any thoughts?
