Litens Tensioner Question...

Post by Cokedoctor » Tue Dec 20, 2011 9:47 pm

I am assembling my 2.4L, and I've gotten to the timing bits. I'm using SRT parts, which includes a Litens designed tensioner. All my parts are Dodge branded components.

I set the tension according to the write-up found here:

http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?t=276308

And I've followed the Chrysler install procedure here:

http://img.neons.org/archives/Installprocedure.pdf

...but at the end, it says to spin the engine a couple times, and check to see if the tang and notch line up in the same spots after. I spin my engine over a few times, and bring it right back to where it was (TDC) but each time, the tang and notch are not where they were before. I've repeated the steps a few times, but each time, its different. Any ideas??

Thanks guys, I hope I was thorough enough for someone knowledgeable to come up with an educated explanation and solution.

Interesting. Are you tightening the mounting nut tight enough before rotating the crank? Once that nut is torqued down the tang shouldn't move.

Yep! Torqueing it to spec each time. I got some insightful help on the .org with this question, I asked on both forums at the same time....this is what they said.

Like they said, you want to adjust the tension after it has been turned clockwise a bit. I don't think it really matters where the timing marks are, as long as they are correct, when the tension is adjusted. Just get it so the belt won't jump, check timing, and readjust the tension. Never turn it counter clockwise once you begin, and you should be good.
