funny idea (03+ only)

Post by OB » Wed Jan 11, 2006 9:26 pm

Ok so im out under my hood puttin a sticker in there and cleanin things up a bit when i think of an idea. I dont know if anyone else feels this way, but i think the plastc chrome grille surround looks tacky and cheap. The black plastic is OK, but the wannabe chrome just aint crackin. anyone ever PAINT them? maybe black to match the rest of the grille? what would i wanna do/get if i wanted to paint it, since its plastc? i know nothin about paint. help me out if u know.

ps how sweet would it be if they made that shit in CF?!

I think if anything, you should paint the grille inserts body color. Painting them black to match the grille wouldn't look to great. I painted mine black, but of course, I have a black car.

Image

If your going to paint them, you need to do quite a bit of prep work. I sanded the inserts down until all the chrome plating was off, I got it down to bare plastic. I primed, and primed, and primed again to get some of the thickness back (the chome plating is pretty thick). Sanded, then painted, wetsanded, painted, wetsanded a bunch more, put on more coats of paint, and then finally a clear coat to protect it.

Yes, it made an awesomely huge difference

I cringe when looking at SE's and SXT's with the chrome crap. I don't know what I was thinking when I had my mesh grille...

Image

Can't forgot a stock picture either. It's not horrable having the chrome strips, it just makes the car look too happy. Body color is the way to go...

You can get it from your local dealership...last i ordered some about a year ago, it was around $7 for a can...but one can should be plenty for just the grille.

just a suggestion, why dont you just tint the chrome to give it the smoked look and the black chrome look.

The grille inserts are expensive from the dealer, if you screw up the ones you have, I have an extra set laying around.

As long as you do the prep work, and apply, light, even coats of the paint, you should be fine.

double check in your doorjam/under your hood that this is your color code.

go to the dealership and tell them you need one spray can of ______ (<--color code here) then get a can of clear coat while you are there and BAM!!! Should run you ~$15 for paint, give or take a little

nifty idea to paint it body color, with the chrome, it gives it sorta that Chrysler look, instead of a Dodge look... dunno might just be me, but every time i see a chrysler, it has some sorta factory Chrome on it
