Project "NAS in SRT"

Post by Jenni » Thu Dec 29, 2011 4:35 am

At the moment i have multimedia HD, 10.2" tft screen, 2 (at the moment not working and have to be fixed) headrest screens, dvd radio, reverse camera.
Sounds perfect - but the HD is driving me crazy:
- no shuffle play
- no playlists, one can only play music and video by folder
- if i forget to turn the HD off before i turn off ignition it starts next time in folder one, title one
- folders are in confusing order, one cannot sort them
- navigation only with cursor keys. not fun if you wanna go from letter A to M or whatever - it takes just forever

So i need to have something new

I read alot about "streaming media content to iPhone/iPad".
Therefor i bought the Filebrowser App and tested it.
With this app i can connect the iPhone to any public folder in my network and play videos (as long as in the right file format) and mp3, search, play shuffle.
So i bought a NAS WLAN router (with USB connector for the external HD) - and i will install that in the SRT.
So i have my own WLAN network IN the car for some experiences.

Next plan is to sell the in dash screen to buy an iPad.
Music will stream the same way - but directly to the iPad so i can use that touchscreen to control it - and dammit i just wanna have an iPad!

Why the iPhone loop way? Just no money for the iPad now... :buah:

And why the heck all that efforts?
I often drive long trips and i just wanna have all my music library, TV series and movies with me. And i just like it to tinker...
And i absolutely dislike to delete and upload new music and movies every day to my mobile device. ALL the library has to be availlable ALL the time.

Oh - and maybe there is something better in the market. But i just don't wanna spend to freaking much money.
Car PC? Also nice - but i just wanna go a different way...

Btw: That system is ready for the future.
It is assumed that mobile flatrates (3G) will be faster, more solid and without limited volume in the future - so then i can directly stream from my computer at home into the SRT.
(Technically it totally works already - but no music in tunnels sucks and 300MB limit in my cell phone contract are reached in no time...)
