Going from coilovers to struts...

Post by DetergentCandy » Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:24 pm

What's needed other than struts and springs?
Right now I'm on coilovers, but want to go with stock struts and Stage 1 springs.

Struts from the dealer are about $100 each.
Springs from Modern are $250.
So i'll need strut mounts and bearings as well? Modern carries them, but it looks like Rock Auto is a bit cheaper. Any other sources for these parts? Or some place I can get them all in a kit?

Anything else i'm missing?
And why are the front struts the same, but the rears always have a dedicated left and right?

Because the sway bar bracket is on different sides of the strut body for the rears.

Why, may I ask, would you want to go from a coilover to strut/spring?

Oooooh. The more you know.

Well, the main reason is that I have no desire at all to adjust my ride height, or camber, or dampening. I don't need them.
I love the drop of S1 springs. I think it's perfect. I hear the ride quality is great too. Pretty stockish, eh?

I know a lot of people will think it's stupid. Coilovers are superior etc etc. I don't really care :P I drive my car everyday. It goes everywhere all the time. For me, coil OVERS are OVER kill. See what I did right thurr?

If I can sell my coils to someone who will actually use 'em properly, then i'm happy.

I was wondering the same thing...... :-k

It's not the 1st time that I have heard of people going from coilovers, back to struts..... But these seemed to be people who had "E-Gay" brand or some other cheap Chinese rejects, and were not happy with them.

This. 100%

Coilovers are for racing. If you don't race, they're overkill.

So adjust them once and never do it again? You make it sound like you have to continually adjust them... I adjust mine twice a year: Summer settings and Winter settings. And I wouldn't even have to adjust them at all if I didn't want the car lower in the summer. It literally takes me 30 minutes, and I can do it while I'm changing the oil.

I just don't see why you'd downgrade from something that lets you adjust your settings to exactly what you want, to something that will never perform to the same specs; all while spending money to downgrade.

It's not downgrading though.
More isn't always better? :P Something like that.
Why have something that's adjustable if i'm just going to find the settings I like and keep it there?
If someone else can put them to better use than me, then as long as I break even, or close to even, i'm happy.

And kinda what Uriah said.

So how are coil overs functionally different than a strut with OEM type springs? its all about the damper.

OP: What spring rate is the Mopar spring vs what you have now? If you want a softer ride you really need less initial compression damping so its less jarring.

S1 springs = 175F 135R
BC Coilovers = 336F 224R

I think.

Megans = 450 front, 330 rear

That's tighter than Rolex GT Cars. Too tight. Dampening doesn't help THAT much.

FTR eibach pro's on non adj SRT struts is rather rough. that's 150lb/in on the front and plenty of suspension travel. The harshness has been compared to be similar to koni inserts on 350lbF GC's.

A neon doesn't have allot of suspension travel and large bumps are going to be felt hard. rubber strut mounts and LCA bushings help deaden the impact.

If its all about spring rates then get softer springs. Personally I'm going with a 250/200 or 300/250 springs and koni inserts.

in what way are they overkill? i understand they are designed for racing and on a DD they arent being used to their full potential but surely thats like having an iPhone 4s for making phone calls only, sure you dont need anything that good but you've already bought and paid for it ....?

... unless your gonna sell them for more than it'll cost you to buy the struts & springs and pocket the cash ???

Thanks, Tam!
Alright spoke to iThane though.
Too many miles on his struts for my tastes though.
I did find a local guy who's gonna sell me his struts and S1 springs with 30K miles for $250 :D
End of the month :)
