Want firm steering

Post by NeonDerek » Sun Jan 01, 2012 9:38 am

Hello all I have a 2003 dodge neon sxt with a Srt 4 swap. And whenever I launch hard the steering likes to go crazy. I was wondering if there is a way to firm it up. Would putting a rack and pinion out of a acr or a r/t help me out cause they are said to have firm steering? And I don't really want to go with a Srt steering rack do the the worse turning radius. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Its called torque steer. Its part of owning a fast FWD. There are ways to firm up your steering, urethane bushings would help. I know there are some chassis braces out there too.

The firm feel steering only makes the effort to turn the steering wheel harder. (Less power assist) It won't make it any more resistant to the forces the tires place on it. The ACR & R/T rack may help a little in that the 18:1 ratio gives the steering wheel a little more mechanical advantage. But at the sacrifice of quicker response. The SRT rack only needs the steering stops replaced with the R/T, or possibly the SXT ones to get a better turning radius. Even between MTX and ATX, the knuckles, inner tie rods, and steering stops are different. So there are multiple combinations that may be possible. I believe the early 2gn MTX's have the best turning radius.

Four wheel drive trucks use dampers that clamp onto or are part of the tie rod for reducing shock to the steering gear, but there just isn't a good/safe way to do that on our cars.
