Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

There's a rather lengthy thread somewhere on here about M1 HM in the T850. Consensus is it seems to work better.

Ed Peters is awesome to listen to. The guy knows so much concerning drivetrain. I've listened to the part about the Mobil 1 before, but somehow missed the part about the shift forks and syncro rings. Kinda makes you more nervous about the T850.

So does the same apply to the t-350? He never specifically mentions the t-350 for some reason.

Well, technically. But he has a T850 up on the table.

This has me debating on whether I should change the fluid in my t-350 again. The pennzoil synchromesh has been working great, but that info about the synchro materials wearing down uber fast with the wrong lube has me concerned.

Might as well do it, it's a pretty cheap price for peace of mind.

OB has been running M1 HM in his 5 spd. for some time now with no issues. I'm not too sure what would be that different between the T-350 and T-850 that the oil wouldn't work in one or the other.

I did a little research and found that pennzoil synchromesh has a slightly higher level of zinc/phosphorous than the mobil 1 HM. I was gonna swap, but I think I'm safe with the synchromesh.

Haven't had any trans problems yet, but I wonder how much damage was done running atf for 80k miles.

It's not just about the ZDDP levels. Too much and it become acidic. Also have to think about the fibrides on the synchronizers. The ZDDP only deals with metal shear, when the teeth are sliding against each other. The fibrides on the synchronizer stop rings need the right viscosity fluid. The OE Mopar fluid (the $20/qt stuff) is ~5w-30 to 10w-30, as is ATF, but the Mopar stuff has the right quantity of ZDDP in it.

No need to add anything to the HM Mobil 1 fluid, and it's a good low-cost fluid for the Neon 5-speed transmissions. T-350 and T-850.

Info is straight from Ed Peters, we talk almost daily about transmissions.

What has me curious is what he says at 6:50 about older brass synchros. Then the video cuts like they edited out Ed talking about the t-350, would have liked to hear what was said.

the t-350 doesn't have brass synchros though. the internals are almost identical. he was talking about transmissions like the old muncie m20's and such

That makes sense then, I got confused because our 1st and 2nd have brass synchros. The other syncrhos are fiber material so I get it now.

Early 95's and such had brass 1-2 stop rings. Now all are fibride.

T-350's.

I run Mobil 1 10-30 HM in my trans, been almost a year and no problems. Something I'm going to do every year along with plugs and seafoam. Can't hurt.

Only time I have problems with my trans is first thing in the morning when I start it up. First just takes a bit more to get into.... As if there's no fluid on the gears. Other than that, it's been working great.

Fluid doesn't get splashed up until the differential turns, so basically once the car starts rolling. During the winter it's also a bit thicker when cold.
