Torque strut w/ plastic insert torque spec??

Post by srimes » Tue Jan 17, 2012 11:09 pm

:banghead:
Pulled my mounts and filled them with window urethane. Put them back in and follow the alignment procedure in the FSM. Go to torque the upper strut to 87 ftlb as specified, and it just doesn't want to get there. Back the wrench off to 50 and it clicks, switch to the lower mount and torque both bolts to 87 just fine.

Back to the upper mount on the motor side bolt, wrench set to 87. Doesn't feel like it's there and I hear a click. Hmmm, torque some more and it doesn't click. Few more turns and I hear it again. Only it isn't a click, it's a crack. Pull off the strut and the center hard insert is cracked :cussing: . Thing is plastic, but the lower strut had aluminum pieces. PO said the upper strut had been replaced.

Anyone else run into this? What's the proper torque spec for the plastic ones?

I put it back in and just snugged it down. We'll see how it goes.

Seems to be a common problem with the anchor brand upper torque strut: viewtopic.php?t=59530

I know the ones that napa sells are metal and the casting looks very good.

I would not use the plastic ones. If you can't torque that bolt properly, it could work loose, and snap off. You would think they would have been bright enough to at minimum, put a metal sleeve through the plastic.

Or These are not Anchor, but counterfeits that the parts stores are duped into buying. Kind of like clay bricks for i Pads.

These days, anything is possible. Maybe if enough ppl complain to Anchor, something may get done.

Think I'll make a trip to the junkyard and see if they have a factory mount that's OK. I'm going to fill it with urethane anyways so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Finally got to drive the car today after filling the mounts (even though the 1 is cracked). WOW what a difference! Feels WAY more responsive and connected. A bit more NVH but not too bad, still way smoother than my Jeep.

Any risk of driving on the filled and cracked mount? Seems way stiffer than when it was unfilled and uncracked. At least for so far.

Now to chase down the mild chirping comming from the front of the engine...
