CEl help please

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

CEl help please

Post by EDieter » Thu Jan 19, 2012 8:03 pm

Firstly I am not 100% this is the right section for my question so I'm sorry if I am in the wrong place.

I have a 2002 SXT w/ a Stage 3 Hahn Racecraft S20g Turbo, ATX.

I have 3 CEL's; P0133, P0172, and P1685.

P0133 = P1195(M) 1/1 02 Sensor Slow During Catalyst Monitor A slow switching oxygen sensor has been detected in bank 1/1 during catalyst monitor test. (was P0133)
- To me this is a totally different language, I can't begin to guess what is wrong here. Well sorta, I'm thinking the upstream (before my high flow cat?) 02 sensor is bad.

P0172 = P0172(M) 1/1 Fuel System Rich A rich air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally lean correction factor.
- Obviously I am running rich with my a/f, but with a turbo on an SXT wouldn't it read like this anyways? The only thing I can guess to drop this CEl is to buy a defouler like the one on modernperformance.com from vibrant, so the 02 sensors (both?) are further from the exhaust and they might sense a normal A/F. If that is the case would that mess anything up? If I am completely wrong someone please help me.

P1685 = P1685 Skim Invalid Key The engine controller has received an invalid key from the SKIM.
- I think this is because I left my keys in my gf's car when she went to work and I tried using my spare that the dealer gave me, but would not start my car, I think that key is a dud, or the skim in it does not work and I need to possible disconnect my battery and reset the pcm/ecu?

If I'm not even in the ballpark with this stuff please someone help me, I no longer have a garage to work on my car in so anything that needs to be done is going to a mechanic. I figure if I can pinpoint what needs to be done and minimize the shop time (save money) I will be better off. And I also need to get my car registered in freaking NJ now that I moved here so I don't have much time to pass inspection. I believe they just run the inspection off of the OBDII port and run it for a minute and use any existing CEL to check emissions, probably wrong though.

Thank you in advance for any help I may receive.

IIRC, to reset the SKIM, you need to leave the ign on for a few hours with a battery charger connected. I thought there was a thread on it, but I'm not finding it.

I would put a fresh o2 sensor in, and go from there.

Awesome, will do that SKIM reset, I also need to buy a new high flow cat and go somewhere ELSE this time and have them put it in my downpipe instead of cutting a section of my exhaust out and welding it in there underneath what seems to be just in front of the middle of the car. Then I will replace my 02 sensors.
