Best way to quiet SRT exhaust.

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Best way to quiet SRT exhaust.

Post by darthroush » Sun Jan 29, 2012 5:35 am

I'm loving CHP right now, for more than just this issue. Anyways, simply put, what's the best way to quiet it down? I'd rather not remove the rear section and put the factory muffler back on since I'd be stuck with two holes in the rear bumper.

I hate this state. Nothing but Nazi's...

Now that I've cooled down a bit (grrrrrrrrrrrrr), pehaps the better approach is how to tastefully cover up the two exhaust holes.
Also, would leaving the SRT midpipe in be "too much" with the factory muffler; as in: too much backpressure due to the resonators and muffler?

get an rt muffler, its much quieter and has dual exit tips similar to the srt.
the only difference is the srt section is slightly wider tip to tip so you may need to mod the rt muffler slightly

I thought most people put on a glasspack to quieten the srt rear section. I think it was a 22" glasspack, there were some videos on youtube a while back.

Plugging one hole will quiet it down a tiny bit too. (I have done it)

You just need something like this to put in the center of the tips, then a muffler shop can cut the pipe and weld it into the muffler.

I tossed on the longest glasspack. Does it wear out? Sure, after 2 years or so my old one was shot. For $30 you get 31" of baffling pipe. SIGNIFICANTLY quieter.

Those that are adding the glasspack, especially 2003se559 since he knows the BS laws out here, is this in addition to the two resonators? I've got the full SRT system. In the even it doesn't please the Nazi's, and I decide to go the Camaro muffler route, what's the difference between the V6 and V8 mufflers?

OD- I thought about cutting one exit tube section, but I couldn't stand knowing that only one of the two tips is worthwhile. An OCD balance thing. Yeah, OCD sucks sometimes, lol.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Installing a GP will mean removing the resonators. There is only enough length for one or the other.

Camaro Muffler:
The primary difference between the V8 and V6 muffler is the inlet outlet sizes on most. I used the V6 mainly due to the fact the inlet matched the 2.25 pipe. The V8's usually have a 2.5" inlet. If you have 2.5 piping, that's great, otherwise you need an adapter, or the inlet shrunk. The way I see it, may as well get one that already matches, and have a cleaner install.

I used a Walker Quiet Flow, but I imagine most inlet outlet sizes will be similar between brands. Even the Walker was a bit loud for my tastes, so I had a resonator installed. It is still loud when hammering it, but quite livable for normal driving.

I just have the stock SRT exhaust on my n/a and I have only gotten pulled over once for my exhaust note cause i was passing some slow ass on the freeway. Other than than I havn't been hassled by CHP or any other police.

The best way to quiet down the srt exhaust is to put a srt turbo right before it hehe

I'll just have to reinstall the non-SRT midpipe and add the glasspack. Easier than removing and adding.

Thanks for the clarification on the Camaro muffler.

I haven't been hassled by them for anything on this car in the 3.5 years I've had it. The SRT exhaust has been on the whole time. Though, SD has quite a bit more people and noise than where I'm at. Roughly 2.96 million more people. I doubt window tint is a high priority down there either, but up here...it's one of the only things they've got to do.

This is the longest 2.5" glasspack I can find, and it's also the least expensive: http://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Bomb-87516 ... 606&sr=8-1

Overall length is 29.5" and the body is 26". 2.5" inlet/outlet (that's what the SRT piping is IIRC). That'll do, yeah? I can't find one longer for the price ($35 shipped w/o tax). Magnaflow makes a 26" body one too, but for more money too.
I figure I'll just cut out the resonators that I'm not going to use anyways and weld-in the glasspack. That'd be easier than making the 40-minute round trip in the truck to go get the SE midpipe.
