We found two switches.. they do what?

Post by heyybaker » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:05 pm

The 2001 R/T I just got was a trade-in, and the previous owner(s) made some changes. All of them seem to be minor so far, such as a 4 disc CD changer and new stereo, power locks/windows/trunk (although as I understand, it was an option when the car was made, so maybe it's been there?), speakers or amps in the trunk (they don't work ), etc. But today, I noticed two switches. I forgot to take pictures (durrr), but they are these kind of switches:

..Except, both sides don't say "ON", one side says "ON" and one says "OFF" for both switches.. and the one above allows for the switch to be switched the other way for "OFF", which these don't do. The first one, that I found, is to the left of the steering wheel, down a little bit lower. My dad found the second one, which is about the same distance to the left, but down way lower. They're installed rather nicely, look neatly done.

I grew some courage and flicked one on. Nothing. I didn't mess with the other one. There's an unplugged wire dangling near the lowest, nearly hidden one, and there is a speaker wire (not unplugged) that dangerous dangled near the clutch (we taped it up for now).

So.. let's take some guesses before we dig deeper. What do the wonderful 2GN members think these switches do :-s ? I think maybe they had something to do with the speakers in the trunk. Right now my sound only comes from the factory speakers on the doors and dash. Maybe that unplugged wire has something to do with it.

I would trace the wires if possible to fine were they go. They could be anything from neon lights under the car to wiring for the radiator fans. Best idea to do is trace them. Its just my two cents.

Were planning on it when we get the time. Are these common things people would put switches in these cars for? I don't think it is to the radiator fans because the switches have been set to 'OFF' and the fan has been coming on. But I guess it could be to trigger it whenever, like even when you don't really need it on.. seems kind of pointless to me if so.

I hope it's something useful.. otherwise, I don't look forward to pulling them out

Well just going have to trace them. Its change in what people wire things to and what there wiring. They could just be there, and the person never got around to install whatever. You have driven the car, has anything happen out of the normal.

Meh.. neon lights are illegal here.. or well, while driving. But I never just sit with my car in front of people, because I have no time.. or social life.. :)

Yeah, whatever it is they installed it very well. Looks like it's a part of the car, except, we know it's not. Maybe it is neon lights and it is working.. I'll have to try it at night.

Well when I first googled 'car toggle switch' (to find an image of what these look like), before I went to images I found a post.. "How to install toggle switch for amps?" So yes, that's why I think that may be it . I've been at work since then but I'm hoping I can investigate tomorrow, no work :D!
