Post by Public Disturbance » Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:05 pm

So the wife and I bought our first house its not anything huge or fancy 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1 car attached garage, 2412 sq ft. Nice neighborhood and everything.... this may mean I have to hold off on the Neon for a little bit but its more then worth is we can finally get out of a apartment and get into something thats ours. We close Monday!!!!! Just thought I would share some of the excitement.

congrats
It's always nice to know your paying $XXX amount of dollars on something that is yours Vs renting something that you have to give back. At one point I was paying almost $500 a month to rent a home/apt/room/trailer etc, then to find out a house costs just as much.....mmm hard decision....

Ya we were paying $950 a month for our apartment and our house payment will be a decent amount more then that at $1550 a month but to me its more then worth it to me only scary part that Im looking at is now everytime I think about it Im now $207,000 dollars in debt..... but at the same time it feels pretty damn good. Thinking Im just going to drive the Neon how it is for about 5-6 months before I jump back on moddin wagon just so we have a chance to get our savings built back up and have the extra money to get my turbo setup put together..... wish it wasnt going to take so long but its one of those things I have to look at the fact that I need to put family first and have prioritys straight.

:) The bottom line may not be a $600.00/month increase - have someone familiar with your total finances estimate the tax savings from the mortgage interest as an itemized deduction.

You might be able to do a little better if you go through a credit union in your area. My bank is offering a 3.9%, will save you a good bit every month and in the long run.

I'm paying 4.2% on my house then again I only gave 21 for a 3 bed, single bath, detached garage, about 4 years ago.

Congrats on the new home. The time is now to buy if anyone has perfect credit and high 800 credit score. I am amazed at some of the payments mentioned above. I live in California and my mortgage is about 2k a month on something that is 1300 sq feet (have more yard than house which is rare). I used to rent a 1bdrm for over 1300.00 month so renting is evil. Try to get a lower rate. Also look out for the "ownership" cost that will surely come up. Plumbing, electrical, etc. Welcome to property taxdom.

Congrats on the home purchase. Being your own landlord is great.

I'm  at some of the mortgage payments and interest rates posted in this thread- I don't know how y'all can afford it. I got a 5.625% rate back in 2005 when rates were high and tried for the last two years to refinance but no luck (even with a credit score of over 800, no lender would refinance my mortgage since the balance is "too small to be profitable" ).

Gratz on the home!

My parents would have killed for that rate. IIRC, they were paying 10% then, and that was a good rate. Most were in the 16 to 19% range in those days.

But then they also only had to finance $23,000.

Hey it took 5 years to build a two story brick and block house, but at least they weren't saddled with $100 grand plus in debt at those rates. (We are talking the mid seventies)

I rent a "luxury" apartment now for $1,000 a month...

Going to be buying a home in the near future in the $130,000 range (1700 sq ft, 2 car garage - built in 08 or newer) and with the rates I've been told, my payment should be about the same or CHEAPER with taxes, etc... :)

The wife and I both almost have 800 credit scores though.

Congrats on the house. Having something that is your own is great. Not paying someone else rent and having to get permission for things is great. It does mean now if something breaks it on you but it the best investment you can make. Congrats and enjoy.!!
