Empty mount in engine bay?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Empty mount in engine bay?

Post by Red2gen » Sun Feb 26, 2012 3:54 pm

Hey guys, I saw this to day. On my driver side part of my bay, under the battery, near my exaust manifold, is a grayish tray thing, with 3 bolt holes.... Is there something I'm missing. If not what's it for. I am really worryed.

I think you are looking at the bosses on the top of the transmission.
Is yours an MTX, or ATX ??

MTX= manual transmission
ATX= auto transmission

Sounds like the battery tray to me.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. :lol:

The ATX is under the battery, the trans mount is directly under the battery.

From pics in the FSM, I believe you are looking at the top of the differentil on the transaxle. The three holes form a 90º angle, correct? And the halfshafts (axles) are on either side of that...

Yep, that's correct :), would I use that to replace my clutch plate?

And what are the holes there for anyway?

Well, on 1gns those holes were used for a secondary trans mount called a bobble strut, but only on the MTX cars. All the 2gn trans' and cars have them but not for any sort out mount, not sure why they're there, or what they do, but having nothing in them is normal.

Thanks all :)

Jerry is right. The bosses are there, drilled and tapped, but 'unused' on the 2nd gen Neons.

What confuses me is that they're on the ATX transmissions too.......

Also, have any of you done a/c and p/s delete. What size belt do I need, and would it be okay if I did abs delete too?

I'm all about wight reduct

You could delete the transaxle, but, um....

No you cannot get rid of the mounting point. It is part of the transaxle. ATX is just short for Automatic Transaxle.

Because from your last statement, I'm not sure you still understood what it meant.

ABS delete won't get you much in the way of weight reduction.

i always assumed they were machined into the diff housing, for the awd caravans, since they used the same transmissions...Just a guess though.

Could my clutch plate be f-d up, causing my car to vibrate like a car sized dildo, when ever I shift from first to second, doing 20-40kph?

You don't have a clutch. It is an auto per your 2nd post. There is a flex plate, but that would cause more of a consistent worse with more or less RPM vibration.

Most likely the mounts are shot. Engine and trans.

Flex plate is the correct term. I doubt it is the cause of shaking the whole car only when the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd. It spins with the engine, basically is what connects the torque converter (TC) to the crankshaft. It would shake the whole car every time you put your foot on the gas, if not constantly when the engine is running.

It could be anything from the mounts to th TC to an axle shaft cv joint. The kickdown linkage may also need adjusted, or repaired/replaced. The cable end was broken on the 1gn when we got it. It shifted pretty bad until it was fixed.

Best thing to do, if you plan on keeping the car, is to go get one of these, and read up on what is what on your car.
