New muffler, thinkin the "thrush turbo"
So currently i have just a 12" glasspack on my car and well, it sounds like poop haha I mean, its decent until i go over 2500 rpms and then it starts getting REALLY raspy and backfires when my automatic shifts.
So i wanna get a new muffler tomorow (has to be pretty cheap though) and i found that the Thrush Turbo mufflers are relatively inexpensive. Does anyone have one of these or know how it would sound??

It's not a Thrush, but I run a Cherry Bomb turbo muffler on my R/T. Imo I think it's fairly quiet, not raspy, doesn't backfires either, at least compared to the Flowmaster clone muffler the previous owner installed. The Cherry Bomb and the Thrush turbo mufflers should be comparable to each other.

I don't have a muffler but have a 3 or 4" tip on the exhaust pipe and get no back firing or raspy sound unless the engine is cold. This is what it sounds like inside with the windows closed at WOT from 0-60 with the 3 speed auto using my phone to record it.

That isn't really a good thing either.mrsixstrings12 wrote:it only backfires when its at WOT.
If anything, backfires should be when decelerating, definitely not accelerating. A muffler itself cannot create backfires. Ideally, it needs a leak in the system to provide oxygen, and unburned fuel. But you can still get some nice rumbling, popping with a sealed system.
With a stock neon cam, unless there is an issue, getting unburned fuel into the exhaust is pretty tough, since there is no overlap.
Barry, you are a creeper.

I just put a Thrush welded muffler on my sxt. Compared to how the car sounded before with the stock 255,000 +mile muffler, it's loud.It has a nice tone to it, and doesn't sound too ricer-ish. Sounds good to me, but I may have to tone it down to get past inspection.

Almost any V6/V8 designed muffler will be louder on a 4 banger.
Resonators are your friend.
I put a Flowmaster 70 I had on the neon, just to hear how it sounded. (The 70 is the quietest series) While it was decent on the Jeep, it was incredibly loud on the neon. I think the open pipe was quieter. Not that I could have used it anyways. It would be like trying to fit a 55 gallon drum under there.

I would get them at least flush before pointing down. Having the sound bounce between the road and the floor pan may not be the desired effect you are after.
