00 neon. Cooling fan ?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

00 neon. Cooling fan ?

Post by garnhart » Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:00 pm

I have a wrecked 00 neon i have one connector for cooling fan. It has 3 wire going to it. The old fan was broken and gone. With this 3 wire connector does that mean that this was a dual fan. please lmk asap. thank you

Not at all.
The dual-fan has an adaptor IIRC

At least you could identify the fan by the trany -

manual 1 fan, 3-speed atx 1 fan, 4 speed atx = dual Fan

4 speed ATX wasn't available in the US/Canada until 2002.

From what I can tell the '00 only came with a single fan for either transaxle.

the '01wiring only shows a light green and black wire to the fan. But '00's are known to be unique with a few things that are '00 specific.

Unless the fan was dual speed, I don't think you have the right connector. Are there two fan relays in the PDC, or one? It is the bigger square relay.

I'll take a look at mine tomorrow morning and let you know, but just for reference, it's a 5 speed

OK, this is a related question to this post.
Have a 2000 neon with front end damage, put in a 2002 radiator and fan. 2000 had single fan and 2002 has dual fan. when hooked, facing the front of the cooling fan motor the fans spin clockwise, which pushes air forward???? If i reverse polarity the fans dont spinn (must have diode protection). I took the used rad. and fan assembly out of a salvage yard car myself. All the fittings were the same. I even tried hooking each motor up seperate on seperate relays but same thing. Hooked direclty to battery and same thing????
Why is is pushing air forward, from engine compartment through radiator.
Thanks
Craig

Interesting....

Was/is the '00 fan usable?

I don't see why the single fan/shroud wouldn't mount to the '02 radiator unless the mount points are different. Did you have to change the bottom hose? Are both radiators from ATX cars? ( The '02 one should be an ATX due to the dual fans.)

Possibly the ground isn't making good contact. You may have to check all the ground points on the front of the engine bay. Some '00 neons had them behind the headlight area, and others on the tie bar above the headlights.

thanks for the quick reply.
The fan on the '00 was distroyed. The '00 is a manual and the '02 was a ATX. Thus, the double fans.
Even when i direct wire them for testing, direclty to the battery they will only work in one direction. Positive direclty to battery + and negative to battery -. Spins good on one hookup and not at all on the other. That is why i think these DC motors are single direction.
Unless I am missing something it appears they are meant to spin in this direction, but that blows air forward?

Unless someone replaced the blades with the wrong ones, I'm not sure what else would move the air forward. I don't have a dual fan set up to look at to know which way the blades are pitched/direction they spin.

Is it clockwise from the front of the car or rear?

Can you post pics? Possibly someone with dual fans can help you out.
