Foglight issues.

Post by BoostedPDX » Wed Mar 21, 2012 3:30 am

2003 SXT.

The fog light "light" is on, on the cluster. However the fog light switch is turned off. (multifunction switch) If i turn the blinkers on to the left the fog light "light" goes out on the cluster. If i turn the blinkers to the right it stays lit. The fog lights themselves are not on.

Now... If i turn the fog light switch on the fog lights do NOT come on. And the fog light "light" on the cluster stays lit whether or not i turn the blinkers on left or right.

My first guess is the multifunction switch is bad....

Anyone else have ideas?

Thanks
-Nick

The fog part of the multi function switch is probably bad. There's a how-to somewhere on how to fix it.

Grabbed another MFS and installed it. The light on the cluster is gone, unless i actually turn the fogs on. However the fogs still do not turn on. I am hoping both bulbs are dead as I have already checked the fuse. This is a good known switch from a friends car.

Other then both bulbs being dead at once, and the fuse being bad. What else to check?

Thanks

I've got the same problem. My left fog has not worked for years. The bulb is good, I know this for a fact. The right bulb just went, now I know that one is dead. I've just given up on the left fog.

@BoostedPDX - sure you have a MFS with foglight-function ?

Maybe on the plate inside this bridge is missing

@titansxt - have you ever checked the plug ?

Yes... I have the one with the fog light function. If I did not have the one with fog lights it would not turn the light on and off on the cluster. Also when using my friends (his has fogs, and his fogs were working before and after removing and testing his MFS) they did not work with his either.

ok, the pinout on the plug is the same for the indicator and for the foglights. There are two wires coming from it.
So the MFS itself has to function properly.
Check that plug under the bumper if there is voltage when fogs are on.

I will check that to see if there is power... But if the new MFS switch is functioning properly what else other then dead bulbs or fuse is there to check. Aside from bad cut or frayed wires.

Possibly a ground wire. If your friends MFS fixed your indicator light problem but you still do not have any light output from BOTH fogs...makes me think they aren't being grounded properly. The likeliness that they both burnt out around the same time and you never noticed would be odd...

Check the grounds next to the headlamps. I just had my right-hand side one loose and it caused a whole bunch of problems with my MFS while the headlamps were turned ON (high beam, right turn signal & fog light indicators illuminated on & off intermittently (and frequently) while they weren't even engaged), right headlamp and both fog lamps very dim/flickering, wipers going non-stop w/o being able to control them no matter what position you put the stalk in...just worth a shot to check! Takes a whopping 1 minute to lift the hood, grab a Phillips screwdriver and tighten 'em down.

If it's not them - it may be also other grounds like the ones located behind the radio/HVAC controls. Always try the *free* things first before running out and spending money on new parts (MFS) that you may not need

G'luck bro!

I believe tt is a two part problem. After testing his MFS in my car and it fixing the indicator light and blinker / fog indicator problem I purchased a new MFS. With it installed the indicator problems are gone. Also i should add that today before installing the new MFS the passenger blinker was not working. After replacing the MFS it works now.

I have yet to test to see if I have power at the plugs for the fog bulbs. But as far as them burning out at the same time and not knowing... I agree. However I just bought the car... let me tell you. Stock plugs, wires, water pump, timing belt on a 120K mile car... They could have been burning out 1 by 1. I don't think the PO would have even cared. So very possible both bulbs are shot. Ill get my new multi-meter out tomorrow and check it out and report back.

Thanks for the quick replys guys. I have owned a low mile SRT in the past, but it had zero problems, so this is my first NGC i have had to trouble shoot stuff on.

If anyone can feel your pain, bro, it's me. I owned an Audi A6 2.7L Bi-Turbo before repairing my sister's salvaged 2003 Neon SXT (owned since brand new) which I now call Charlotte. The Audi was nothing but trouble. Issue after issue...dollar spent after dollar spent. I ended up paying over $9k in maintenance in just a 2 year period - and that was with me doing 95% of the labor! Thankfully the previous owner did the TB/WP/Thermo right before I bought it ($2300 bill from Audi).

I just got Charlotte back this week, after dropping her off at the mechanics for a brake job (lost my brakes after rear cylinder drained all of my brake fluid out - NOT fun ) Since I was going to be down the beach for the week, I told him just do the entire TB/WP/Thermo job and I'll pick her up when I get back. All in all the total bill was only $714!

Moral I learned...although Dodge might not be the most luxurious of cars...and Neon's may have their pitfalls...they are overall pretty good cars and when things do break, they are easy and/or cheap to repair :) So I'm going to probably drive Charlotte until she dies. For the issues that do pop up in the future - that is what we are all here on 2GN for - to help each other out  So I'm happy to help ya along the way of fixing your problem, throwing ideas of what to check next, until you get the issue corrected. So just keep us updated with your outcomes of the multi-meter and we'll go from there.

Okay so i took the splash guard off under the fogs. And the passenger side fog light was not even plugged in. Plugged it in and the passenger side fog now works. Its funny... because when I was messing with the MFS i briefly looked at the fogs, did not even touch them. The fog bulbs looked plugged in. Anyways the MFS fixed my dash light problem, and the bulb plugged in and now they work. However... now I need to get new bulb(s) for them. :) But problem solved. So not both burned out, just one not plugged in all the way and one burned out.
