Tilt Wheel Stops Chime and Horn

Post by keeper1016 » Sat Apr 07, 2012 1:22 am

Hey all,

My Neon just started a perplexing problem. With the key in the ignition, door open, sometimes the chime will not sound, nor will the horn work. If I move the tilt wheel up or down the chime and horn will begin working again. It's like there are dead spots as I move the wheel up and down.

I can't duplicate the problem by wiggling wires at the ignition switch connectors, MFS or the cluster. I was suspecting the "key-in ignition switch sense" circuit. Visually the wires look fine, and the wiggle test won't reproduce it. :aargh:

I've read that the MFS is a problem child, but I cant find a chime or horn circuit that runs through the MFS in the wiring manual. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Trying to find a common denominator that could cause both problems. What am I missing? Thanks!

That could be your problem

These problem may not be tied together. Depending on how much I put my key in the ignition will determine if the chime works or not. The true way to test the door chime is to put the key in and turn it forward one click. That will assure the key is in far enough to engage the sensor.

Now tilt the wheel up and down. Does it keep on chiming? If so, you have no problem. If not, you may need to replace that sensor.

As far as your horn is concerned, your clockspring is starting to go. Sorry :(
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

That makes perfect sense, but I have one detail that still makes me think they're related. They both occur in unison. When I hit a dead spot tilting the wheel, it causes both to not work, and both work when I leave the dead spot. I apologize for not adding that in my first post.

I tried the one click forward, but it still does it.
Im gonna look closer at the wire harness tonight. Maybe something has chafed possibly. Strange. Thanks for the responses! I sure appreciate it.

There is a connector at the bottom of the column, just under the dash. Check that one to see if it has become loose. It connects the clock spring to the under dash harness. Not sure about the chime part tho.

Thanks for the help yall. I took off the loom from the harness leaving the column. Didnt see anything bad. Wiggle test still didnt show anything. I kept moving the wheel up and down, noticing that down force stopped the chime and up force started the chime.

I kept looking around and all of a sudden, it started working right. I've been checking it all day and so far it doesnt have any problems. Strange. Guess I'll put it back together. Thanks again for all the help. If it starts back, Ill come back here and cry some more.

Got another question about the tilt wheel while the subject's going:
Is there a preferred grease to lube the slide mechanism under the column? Mine feels kinda rough when you move it.
