Help!?!

Post by quicksilvr » Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:09 pm

I just helped a friend fix the rear bumper of her 2000 Saturn SL2. There was a spot about the size of a CD where she'd backed into a 15 passenger van and the paint flaked off. She didn't want to pay $350 do have a shop do it, so we just ordered some factory matched paint online, as well as clear coat and some other stuff. It was like $40. Anyway, I got it sanded down, masked off, painted, sanded, painted, and clear coated. The color looks great, but now there is a definate line and clear coat "flashing" (extra material, where there is more clear coat, kind of like the extra rubber on new tires) where I pulled the tape off. How do I get rid of that???

Wet sand it all smooth then use a buffer and some polishing compound to shine it back up.

1500 seems a bit too harsh for your application. If your looking to smooth out just the little overspray, then I suggest going with something like 4000 or 5000. Then use a buffer with some polish to get the shine back.

well it depends on the line and how thick the clear is, if its a thick line then you will be there all day with 4000-5000 it truley depends on the line and how thick it is i would use 1500 and just wet sand lightly untill line is gone feel area in between sanding.

It's pretty thick. :( I think I'll have to start with 1500, and then move to somehting finer. I've not done a whole lot of this type of finish work, so it's a learning process. I warned my friend, but she was cool with it. As far as a polishing compound goes, what should I get? I have some Turtle Wax polishing liquid w/ urethane in it.....will that work? Or do I need something better? Thanks for the help guys.
