CAI & exhaust questions..

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

CAI & exhaust questions..

Post by heyybaker » Sun Apr 15, 2012 10:13 pm

I spent a LOT of time with my car today. Poked under the hood a bit and all. Discovered my CAI is really.. wobbly, and loose. There is one clamp on it but that's all, it moves around so easily.. it would easily allow unfiltered air into the engine it seems :/ See below:

Any suggestions/fixes? Or just get a new CAI . At this rate I feel everything needs replaced anyways . Also, if not a new CAI, the air filter is FILTHY.. but for the life of me I can't find any sort of brand or anything. Does this look familiar to anyone, so I know what filter to purchase?

Last question.. there was some questions when I first joined on my exhaust, as it didn't look like it fit. It seems kind of loose, as well, and being so I can't really tell if it fits or not.. but my dad says it doesn't. I have an emissions inspection soon and my dad says: "Good luck passing with that loud, illegal exhaust of yours"  I'd have it louder, personally. So, anyone know if this is the stock exhaust, or if it was replaced?

Holy shit girl, First thing you need to buy is an inner fender liner, Then a K&N filter, that looks like an Ebay special. The part that is broken in the airbox is to prevent hydro lock. It is supposed to suck air if the filter is submerged. It can be replaced separately, or eliminated.

The inner fender liner will make the new filter live a much happier life. IIRC, you need an R/T specific liner.

Edit:
And no, it isn't a stock exhaust. Depending on how loud it is, and what mood the inspector is in... IDK if they have a specific Db level, where you live or not, but they should have a meter to measure how loud it is, if there is a law in place. The inspector's opinion is not above the law, so you might want to call ahead, and see if there is a Db limit, or if it is up to the inspector's discretion.

Now thats nasty, first get new filter, 2nd clean up the intake pipe, 3rd take out the stock filter box bottom. would make it look much cleaner.

If you going to put a new air filter in the fender well you need a liner and splash shield. Also obv. a new filter also. I would not reccomend K&N, their micron filtraion efficiency absolutley sucks. The best that I found for a decent price were green, (sorry brand name escapes me right now.) Take a look at any aftermarket filter book and you just need some simple measurements to match one up.

Added to my list! Also, it's really not that loud.. but then again, that's my opinion. It DID pass PA emissions, because it had the stickers, but I don't live in PA, and I hear their emissions are a bit more lenient. I don't know if they have a Db limit... I'll check.

Haha, yeah I know :(. My dad had thought he had a new boxed filter to replace it with, but after weeks of reminding him, no such luck. EVERYTHING needs cleaned, honestly ;).. it'll all hopefully be taken care of before Carlisle

measure the OD of the intake pipe ... I may have a "spare" K&N filter to offer you at a bargain price :)

True, but the filter box does make a solid TB mount, and with the lid in place it looks more like stock. Plus a stock filter could be bought and installed from your local Wally World until it gets a splash shield/liner. ;)
