alright, so I'm getting frustrated...

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

I've searched high and low to find a "How-To: Painting Valve Covers"...

...but I can't so I don't wanna hear any crap about "you should have searched it" or "the search button works wonders" lol.

Does anyone have any helpful tips as to how to do this? I plan to changing my valve cover gasket and I figured I'd paint the VC as well... I work at AutoZone so the stuff shouldn't be too hard to come by. (Discounts are beautiful lol)

Just so you know, the valve cover on your 2000 is plastic. If you want success in painting, get a metal one from a Magnum engine.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

All 2nd gens. Unless your car is a R/T or an ACR, you have a plastic valve cover.

I wouldn't want my plastic VC in a 350* plus oven. Plus with powder coating something, the base material needs to be electrically charged and plastic doesn't conduct electricity. No spanks. Clean it, sand it, get a spray adhesion promoter, and some high temp paint. I just cleaned mine and sprayed it with 2 coats of $1 paint and it's held up fine for the past month but I'll see how it handles summer.

Certain plastics will hold static electricity...from what I've heard, powders made for plastic are low temp cure, like 200 derees f.

as to seans ability to powder coat. I grabbed a 96 aluminum sohc valve cover from sneakers o toole, and had sean PC it for me. Pictures speak for themselves me thinks.

After (THIS IS POWDER COATED)

if you have to stay with a plastic 2gn cover, proper paint is everything. but at most pick and pulls a 1gn aluminum sohc valve cover usually cost around 20 bucks and after powder coating.....well you tell me. lol

sorry end rant/

LOL fair enough. Does your city have an industrial area? if so they will have either a machining district or at least a few custom car shops. Powder coating will cost you more this way, but the finish depending on powder (mine is a "hammertone") will most likely outlast the car lol. It stands up to oil, water, heat, and even to a degree, light/uv fade. You get what you pay for. If you work at autozone you can get a 1gn PCV valve for 1.99 and the gasket/plug well gaskets/hardware gaskets kit for 19.99 retail so with your discount maybe 15 bucks? Valve cover at the local part pull scrap yards might cost ya $30 max but probably closer to 20. Powder $50-$100. for 120-150, trust me you will never worry about whether or not your valve cover still looks bad ass again.

also.....idk what's next :-k but I want a motha effin COOKIE!!!

sweet. And there are plenty of 1gn's (and 2gn's) @ ScrapBusters lol. & it's $35.99 for the gasket set. And come to think of it, I live right around the corner from all the factories and whatnot so I guess I'll just have to find one. Thanks man.

Your welcome and wow on the gasket kit!. I just bought mine last week and installed my 1st gen valve cover over the weekend. I went to oreilly's auto for both parts listed and those were what I payed for them there. if you have oreilly's where you live, screw your discount and just go buy em there! lol. either way. good luck brother, trust you will appreciate it when its done.

P.S. Grab the 1gn bolts for the valve cover with it. The bolts themselves are the same on both gens but the hardware grommets are different. There should be 10 of them. just a heads up

O'reilly's has proven plenty of times to have what AutoZone doesn't smh. Even the DupliColor PB7 paint for my car lol. I think I might have to go with them for the Gasket set. Besides, I have a friend who works for them, I'll just use his discount

Lol thank you sir. Working/building/tuning/whatever takes Time, PATIENCE, and just a little bit of extra money. This is how you do things right. Also i know you asked not to mention it but, the search button is our best friend. anytime you are curious about anything to do with our cars SEARCH you may not find exactly what you are looking for but there is so much shared data on this site you will learn things you never thought you wanted to know, but will someday be glad you did

oh, I know lol. I bought the Neon I have now back in January (for $500) and I was on this site almost everyday but I had been so busy I never got around to actually JOINING. However, now that my second job (where I am now) consists of me just sitting at a desk in front of a computer for 8 hours every night, I had no choice. This site actually helps keep me up. I just read the ENTIRE thread about "Christine" last night...and tonight, I'm just coming up with all kinds of ideas for my car. The excitement is what's keeping me up this time. Well, that and the large coffee I bought from McDonald's lol. I just really wish I had friends that like working on cars...or at least Neons. I have ONE friend who drives a Neon...same as mine, just black and an ES :-/ lol but he just drives it and flips out every time something goes wrong as if he expects it NOT to
(it's pushing 190K -__- ).

lol yeah believe it or not some people actually buy econoboxes like the neon and only baby it around to work and to run errands. These cars can be quick though too. with a little bit of money, yeah more than 500bucks lol but not too insane these cars can really get going. research everything you can and when you buy get quality parts but choose your parts specifically for what you want the car to do.

start a progress log and start catalouging your car. stock configuration, current mods, future goals, and then after all that is in place and can be shared with the community, ask for feedback on your upgrade path. (my Project log is in my sig) Most guys here are like me and will offer advise or share personal experience. Remember here at 2gn we are not a "site" we are a COMMUNITY. we all love our cars and by being an active member and asking questions, sharing your progress, and offering any advise you have, you to will become part of that community

Anywho to end my rant -start a project log lol
