Wheels bearings?

Post by DetergentCandy » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:33 pm

I'm getting like a squeaking, whining sound from my wheels. Specifically when breaking. But I can still hear the sound when driving.
Looks like I have plenty of brake pad left, though.

Kinda sounds like:
tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tcktcktcktcktcktcktcktck

Like a leaf stuck in spokes. This is often accompanied by squeaking.
I'd replace the pads, but again, they look fine. Maybe they're just old? Or is this a sign of failing wheel bearings?

Wheel bearings, axles, brakes could all be suspect. Pull it apart and check.

Sounds like a wheel bearing and possibly lower ball joint. A bad ball joint will creak like a rusty hinge on take off and coming to a complete stop.

It's not so much a creak like a rusty hinge.
More of a high pitched whine/squeak. Like the sound you get when you drill into metal with a dull bit :P

jack up the wheel and check for play at 9 o'clock and 12'0 clock positions.

Jack up the wheel? Just the wheel? Or the car?
And how do I check for play at those positions? Is there a TDC for wheels that I don't know about?

lol he meant jack up the side/wheel of the car that you suspect may be the culprit. Hold the tire at 9 & 5 o' clock positions and wiggle it back and forth to see if there's any play. You can also try lightly spinning the wheel back and forth to see if you hear anything. I had my bearing go out before on my rear passenger side and you definitely can not mistake the whining a bad bearing makes! It was worst when making right hand turns / going around right-hand bends. It actually got so loud, I thought it may be my transmission! haha

Report back w/ your findings
