How loud is the stock R/T exhaust?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

How loud is the stock R/T exhaust?

Post by SXTemily » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:34 pm

Hello 2gn, i was wondering how much louder an RT exhaust is over the factory sxt exhaust. I dont want to get pulled over, but at the same time i hate having a completely silent car. Ive seen the youtube videos but havent helped me much.

It isn't much louder but it has a much better sound to it. My boyfriend put my r/t muffler on his es and never got pulled over for it. I had an SRT axle back on my r/t and got pulled over all the time so I don't recommend that. Not to mention it sounded like shit!

mine sounded okay.. I found it to be a little high pitch but it definitely wasn't loud enough for any kind of ticket or trouble.

Are you referring to the R/T or the SRT? I'm going with SRT, since I haven't heard too many R/T exhausts hit a high pitch.

If you have a turbo, then the SRT axle back isn't nearly as bad.

RT, I found at high rpm's it didn't sound very nice

the muffler I've since replaced it with has a nice deep growl, and sounds great at all rpm's... except when it's cold, but after 5 minutes of driving it's awesome.

i may be jumping in to this a little late, but i have a flowmaster dual on my 01, which is in youtube. it has a nice rumble and tone throughout the whole rpm range, the only neons that i have heard that are louder are SRTs and 1st gens with the giant fart cans. even then none of us get pulled over.

I wish I knew what I had on my R/T, it sounds pretty good. Heard it driving away from me this morning and smiled. Did not smile when I went to drive it and it had been left in 3rd gear.. wasn't expecting this, stalled out and scared me  I do the neutral/brake, I don't leave it in gear.

Nope it was the :D again!

Construction zone was not marked 55 so not my fault and the exhaust ticket would have been dropped so he didn't bother.
This poor cop has pulled me over before for the same things in my r/t.

From what I have heard, the stock R/T exhaust might be 'noticeable' to some people (i.e., little old ladies, and the authorities )..... but to a 'ricer', it might be TOO quiet !!

I am planning on installing an R/T muffler on our 2000 Neon soon, so I guess I will find out.

I have no muffler with a 3" exhaust tip and haven't had any issues with cops. Just the neighbors :D
