Oil leak under passanger side

Post by protivakid » Tue May 08, 2012 8:32 am

Hello,
I was changing my oil this last weekend and noticed that the bottom of my oil pan had some drops of oil on it. Looking underneath on upward I can not see where the oil is coming from. Looking from the top down I do not see any oil. The leak isn't big but still a concern. Any suggestions where to start looking? My car is a 2005 SRT w/ ~50,000 on it. Thanks!

you check the turbo oil feed lines?
It could just be the oil pan gasket, another thing would be to remove the inspection plate on the bottom of the trans and look in the bellhousing to see if there is oil in there, if there is its probably the rear main leaking.

PICS yay! lol.

So this is from underneath the passenger side above the oil pan area. Everything above the red line is dry while the stuff below is wet. Again I am not losing a ton of oil or anything. Thoughts?

Also on the driver's side I saw another leak that looks pretty wet. Is this related to my power steering? In 2008 I had a similar leak and it was the pressure switch.

So the bottom pic seems to be the steering rack, looks like a common problem and the OEM rack is expensive... yay...

Ideas on the top pic? Looking at the FSM it seems like its the oil pan gasket.

May just be the pan gasket seeping a bit. Check the engine trans in front of the rack to be sure it isn't oil being blown onto the steering rack.
You can get them for a reasonable price if you search ebay. Just be sure the replacement rack is from the same transaxle, (ATX or MTX) that your car has/originally had. The steering stops are different, and the inner tie rods. If you get another rack that is from the opposite transaxle of yours, the inner tie rods and stops can be swapped. The only real issue you may run into is if you get a rack from an SRT ot R/T due to the slower ratio. SE/SXT are 16:1 and the performance is 18:1. Completely opposite of the 1gn's.

Mine is as SRT so that would work. If I bothered to replace it though I would probably want new OEM so I wouldn't be down the same road in the near future. I will check the trans tho
