Post by rich tideswell » Wed May 16, 2012 10:24 am

what is the difference between a 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 dodge neon r/t transmission?

Other than the switch of factory recommended fluid to ATF+4 in 2002 because Chrysler added friction material to the faces of the shift forks (like the T-850 trans has), nothing that I know of.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

no gear ratio changes or final drive ratio changes?

the reason i ask is i am looking at an 03 r/t that the seller claims has a bad clutch, but i'm thinking he fragged the trans. there are r/t trannys for sale near me but they are 01's, and the the www.car-part.com search comes up nothing for 03 near me

what was the recommended fliud in 2001?

iirc, the fluid was the old manual trans fluid from the first gens. Doesn't really matter though, ATF+4 is just as bad in the T-350 as the T-850 from what I've been hearing.

And no, no ratio changes. The 3.92 in the PT used a .72 final gear as opposed to our .81 Good for highway cruising.

I thought there were both 0.72 and 0.81 5th gears, didn't they change to the latter in the 03-04 T-350HD 3.94's for fuel mileage reasons? Or am I going nuts?

I guess since there wasn't a 00 R/T or ACR, the cable clutch bell housing is a non-issue here.

No, only the '02 up PT t350 had the .72 fifth gear. All neon 3.94 t350's had the .81.

The PT .72 overall ratio is basically the same as the 3.55/.81

What you may be thinking of is the 3.55 t350 changed in '03 to the .72 fifth. But the 3.94 stayed the same for all years of 2gn ACR and R/T neons.

1gn DOHC MTX's had the same ratio/fifth as the '02 up PT, but they are not HD t350's.
