Sudden RPM surge/spike (when stopped in drive)!

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Sudden RPM surge/spike (when stopped in drive)!

Post by gcretro » Sat May 26, 2012 8:51 pm

04 Neon SE

I was stopped at red light in drive. As always the RPM dropped to about 500 to 600ish.

Then there was sudden surge and the RPM spiked to I think around 1500. I was holding the brake very lightly so the car surged forward. Fortunately I wasn't close to the car ahead.

I am aware of the idle RPM dropping but this surge was the first.

Anything I need to check? Other than clean the IAC (which I have already done recently)

any specific areas or tubes to check for vac leaks? Is there a diagram of the vacuum tubes?

And where is the MAF sensor located on a second gen?
thx

MAP sensor is located on the right side of the IM in the front.

Basically any tubing coming off the IM should be traced/checked. Some of the earlier TB's have a small rubber cap towards the front of the car. They can dry rot, and crack. The extra vacuum port was eliminated on the newer TB's.

Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.
