there is no real way to actualy teach someone how to drive. best way to do it is just give them a few tips and hand the keys off for the day. thats the best way to learn in my expierience. you can start by getting a feel for the clutch though by using no gas and just lightly letting off the clutch so the car starst to creep forward. do that to get a feel of when it grabs and such. next add in a little gas. lightly press the gas while letting off the clutch like you did with no gas and keep the rpms up so it doesnt stall. you can also start to let off the clutch slowly and keep taping the gas to get it moving then once the clutch is almost up give it a little bit of gas and release rest of the way. thats how i learned to get off the line good. you basicaly just gotta keep going trial and error and driving the car till you feel comforatble and stuff.

Exactly what Brad said... key is to learn when the clutch grabs so you know when to start adding gas.

I've been brave enough to teach three different girls (my sister, my fiance and a friend) how to drive a manual, using my car. By the third one, I had my teaching skills down. They consisted of explaining what to do, at what time (girls ask some funny questions about cars....), starting and stopping like a million times in the Radio Shack parking lot (it's always empty) and then basically letting them drive without me saying anything....unless they asked a question. They learned a whole lot more from simply driving than they ever did from me. Like refect and Diablo0 both said, you really really have to get a feel for the clutch, when it engages, and how it engages. The best way to do that is to start from a dead stop and then go until you are totally off the clutch. Do that a million times. Once you're driving (past 1st gear), just take it slow and experiment. My fiance is the only one of the three whose personal car is a manual, and she drives her car better than I do....because I'm not used to it. You'll get the hang of it, just be patient.

Trust me, Im in the same boat

I never learned to drive stick until I styarted working at a dodge dealership.. I first learned to drive on a Matrix ( one of the used cars), and that went pretty well. I got used to soft clutches, and then I drove the new 6 speed jeep wranglers. you could slowly let off the clutch and it wont stall without tapping the gas....balances it out itself.

But, I just need a car to practice more on. Only problem I have is starting out...but who doesent when they first learn?

If you really want to learn how to drive stick, then have someone park the car on a hill. Get into the drivers seat, then give it a go. You'll learn faster that way, otherwise you'll be paying for that thing you backed into! LOL. J/K.

Everyone pretty much supplied good tips. Like already mentioned, practice is the key. Try to get into a large parking lot with no cars. That way you are comfortable, and have space do do your thing. Good luck, and let us know how you are doing!

And in case you didnt already know, when your already moving and out of first gear you can just push the clutch in throw it in gear and let go of the clutch immediately, no need to ease off of it.

Also, if you ever have trouble shifting into reverse when you are parked simply clutch, shift to 4th, then while keeping the clutch depressed you should be able to shift into reverse much easier.

What else.... Oh, you know how in an ATX if you are doing some parking manouvering or simply want to go from forward to reverse at a slow almost creeping speed you can just shift right from drive to reverse? on an MTX it's best not to shift into reverse until you are almost completely stopped.

If you want to have good gas mileage try to keep the RPM between 1800 to 2200 while driving.

Check out this link I found, will probably be very helpful to you:

http://www.ehow.com/how_3234_drive-car-with.html

Best of luck.

My best advice, don't be in a rush and dont worry about that asshole blowing his horn behind you if you stall, youll get it, and once you got it, YOU GOT IT and should be able to drive any MTX vehicle, even a viper.
