Spark But No Fuel Spray, Plz Help

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Spark But No Fuel Spray, Plz Help

Post by TheHitman » Sun Jun 10, 2012 8:18 pm

OK so heres my problem, Im swaping out a motor out of a 97 that got wrecked, the motor still ran fine. Im putting it into a 02 that had a blow engine. Hooked everything up, turn the key, fuel primes, but wont fire up, spray starting fluid into the TB and it runs, stop spraying and it dies. Took off the fuel rail turned the key on, injectors wont spray, crank, still nothing. Got spark but no fuel. Hooked up a external fuel pump to the rail to rule out fuel pump, still nothing.
Skimed back the negative wires on the injectors and grounded it directly to the battery, all the injectors spray on prime and on crank but the motor still wont fire. :cussing: :banghead: When the key is turned on there is a whineing noise coming from the IAC valve ontop of the TB, every TB we have put on has done the same thing.

Heres what we changed.
Crank Sensor
Cam Sensor
Fuel rail w/injectors
Swapped dash wiring to a 01 with a 01 PCM to get around skim key
Throttle body
Checked to make sure the cam is turning so not the timing belt.

This is the dumbest thing ive ever saw when it comes to problems with a neon not running and we can not figure it out. If anyone can help me out i would be eternally grateful because im ready to scrap the whole thing and be done with it.
:cussing:

"In no particular order"..... Here are my thoughts / suggestions.

- So, if I am reading this correctly, you are not getting fuel pressure.
Right ?

- Is power getting to the fuel pump ?

- How about the relay for the fuel pump ? Is it sending voltage to the fuel pump ?

- Is the relay for the fuel pump, getting voltage itself ?

- How about the ADC relay ? Same as above.

- How is the continuity / condition of the wiring and plugs, for the Cam and Crank sensors ?

- You mentioned having SKIM. Did you remember to disable / disconnect the SKIM module, before installing the NON-Skim PCM and turning the key ??

No, we are getting fuel pressure, fuel psi is around 60 when primed.
Fuel pump is getting power, When the negatives from the injectors are skimmed back and and wire ran to the negative terminal of the battery the injectors work but the car will still not run.
Yes the skim module was not plugged in when the non skim pcm was on.

Hmmm, if you have spark, one would think the injector drivers would be grounding also.

Hopefully the injectors are in the IM while you are cranking it checking for spark.

SKIM/ wouldn't let the coil drivers work either, so i think that is pretty much ruled out. Tho I doubt you had to swap the entire dash harness. Just unplugging the SKIM module should have done it?

ASD relay wouldn't let power go to the coil/injectors so that is good.

Any codes?

All the pins in the PCM straight? Connectors not corroded?

Basically you are not getting ground switched to the injectors. It has to be either cam sensor related, or PCM, if all the wiring is good. and connectors are making contact.

You will get spark before you get fuel. Fuel before spark would cause emissions issues, and possible backfires.

Prolly not the coil and cam sensor connectors swapped, not sure you would get spark, but I can't say that for sure. That does happen a lot in swaps, as they will interchange with each other.

If they are not swapped, try unplugging the cam sensor, and see if it fires up after cranking, it might need to crank longer than normal, but if it is a CPS issue it will run unplugged.

How about the ground wires that bolt on to the upper radiator support? If you miss those the car will crank but won't start..

I miss my neon at times. She treated me well and taught me a lot about cars in general. I will always have a special place in my heart for these cars. Heres to the 2gn community.

True !!!

Not only that, leaving that ground disconnected while trying to start the engine, can fry the fuel drivers in the PCM.
Ask me how I know.....
