Would CAI fix shuddering at low RPM due to A/C

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Would CAI fix shuddering at low RPM due to A/C

Post by cpiggott » Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:57 am

Not sure if this has been asked before, or if its a common occurrence, but I only had a few minutes to look around the forum and didn't see much.

Since its been hot the past couple days in the mid-west, instead of riding with the windows down, I have had my A/C unit on, only problem is that when I pull up to a light, or any place that requires me to stop for more than 20 seconds, I have to turn the A/C unit off. For some reason at 800 or so RPM at idle, my car starts shuddering, and its not terrible but just enough to annoy me. Seems like the engine just isn't getting enough air. I was wondering could a CAI increase air flow enough or if its an actual problem.

Its a 2005 SRT Design(I know I wish it was a real one, but kind of strapped for cash when i bought it), so it has the hood scoop, I have seen that air redirect mod, thinking about doing it if no one has any other ideas.

Also if anyone has a link to somewhere I could find forums about the AC, have a couple more ?'s. would be much appreciative.

Being warmer, the pressures in the A/C system are higher. It will shake worse when hotter. A CAI will not help this at all.

My A/C hits so hard at first, the gas must be pushed, or either the engine will stall, or the PCM cuts the A/C clutch power. When it is cooler ambient temps, it works fine. AFAIK, it is factory fill amount of R134, so I doubt it is over filled, and it didn't really start this until right before Carlisle 2010. It is still working....

Mine does the same thing at idle, just vibrates everything. For some reason my compressor cycles off/on every 5 seconds at idle, doesn't seem to do it any other time.

Not sure if the charge is low or if it's a normal thing. I don't think my a/c system has aver been checked so I may do that.

I wasn't sure if it was a problem with everyone, it only happens for me in the heat too, just annoying that its constantly doing it, i do try to just keep my foot on the pedal keep the revs up, but if im on a hill thats a no go, pointless to keep pulling the handbrake. guess i'll have to wait till its cooler out.

Taking off like that on a hill can be tricky, I've done it on occasion. Usually I just turn the air off and suffer at red lights to avoid the hassle.

I don't think it would be as bad if our cars idled at 1k rpms, seems to be pretty smooth when I hold the idle there.
