hey everyone, like most of us neon owners, my ac compressor has bit the dust...
however i never use a/c and i would like to just rip all the plumbing out of there and cap it all off.
my question to ya'll is: can i go right to running a shorter belt, or do i have to install another dummy wheel somehow in place of the compressor?
if so is there a kit available?

Just buy the A/C delete belt at any parts store.

alright so i found the part number, just needed to do some searching.
gates K040440 seems to be the belt I need.
so is this all I will need to completely remove my a/c system?
can i remove all of the plumbing leading up to my firewall?

There isn't a lot of weight savings to be gained. You would be surprised how little the compressor weighs.
If it is not a dedicated track car, then you may as well leave it intact. If your car is totaled by another driver, a ripped out A/C system is going to drop your compensation considerably. They don't know that the belt didn't get thrown off in the accident. "It was there a few days ago when I checked my fluids/belts/hoses" Of course if the pulley has rusted, you are
Not to mention the EPA / w/e Canada has violation of letting the Freon out. A seized/bad compressor does not necessarily mean the Freon has leaked out on it's own.

so are you saying I can run a shorter belt and leave the compressor intact as well?
as for the freon, yes it is very illeagal to drain into the atmosphere. you must have it properly evacuated, any shop can do this for you

Possible. Just make a straight line from the bottom of the PS pully to the bottom of the crank pulley, if the A/C pulley is not touching that line, then yes. You could also just remove the A/C clutch assy. (Which could be what's bad)
But looking at the illustrations for the drive belts, the A/C delete belt should clear the whole assy with ease.
That will save you the expense of having the freon evacuated.
Nothing like paying them to take out your freon, that they will sell to someone else.

ok not to jack this thread but how Do you remove the a/c clutch assembly and how do you tell if thats the issue or the compressor? My a/c would blow not cold so I charged it with freon and the air got cold but it sounded like a cat getting ran over when it was on............Just trying to decide what is the problem before doing the a/c delete.

If you over charged the system it may cause the compressor to be very hard to turn. Thus making the belt slip/squeal like Ned Beatty in Deliverance.

lol no it is not the belt slipping or squealing but it didnt sound good.......lol.....would really like to have my a/c but not sure if its the compressor or just the assembly.
