New Here (Came to the dark side)

Post by freelancer1988 » Sat Jul 28, 2012 1:10 am

Not sure what to say really. I have been a hater of the Neons as long as I can remember, BUT now I own one. lol. I will say that the car is not as bad as I thought. Still hate the weird no power window option on the back doors, but w/e.

Anyways... before I get murdered.

I am now a owner of a 2002 Dodge Neon SE. I have all the options I believe for that model... even the 4 disc CD changer. I got the car for 300 dollars. It is not in the best shape, but the motor has been rebuilt and the Trans is brand spanking new. The car popped a P0700 and a P0605 code so the previous owner decided to take it to the crusher.

I was just in the right place at the right time. He lived right across from a friend of mine. The friend needed help flushing the cooling system and we were in the garage. I walked over to him and noticed he needed help loading the neon on his dolly. I was more than happy to help him get it ready for the crusher. :ban:

Anyways, long story short.... I diagnosed the problems and he told me what would I give him for it. I told him no more than 300 dollars... To my surprise... He accepted. Signed the title over and I was upset all day.

Anyways. NO MORE HATE FROM ME!!!

I drove the car home at a max of 30 miles an hour. I didn't want to damage the rebuilt motor or trans. The previous owner offered to dolly the car to my place, but I lived about 33 miles away and still needed to help my friend.

Found out why the TCM failed...

Image

I decided to go out and find another one... Didn't really want to buy a new one... so Junkyard I go. Found a totaled 2002 with all the same options. Same rims too. I snagged the TCM from that. It had a little surface rust so I pulled the cover off and had it sand blasted clean and then repainted with some Rustoleum paint. (I only had blue from a previous project.)

Image
Finished!!
Image

Anyways... so far the only other problem with the car involved the window switched, but they were rebuilt and now work like new. I need to realign the sunroof because it is loose in the froint and sticks up some when closed, but that should be easy.

So far I have had it for just a week and I have taken back 90% of the hate I had for this thing. It is growing on me and I am glad to see this site. I have found a lot of useful information here and hope to be useful here as well.

I will upload some pictures of the car Sunday.
The cars body is no where near perfect, but it is in one piece and is not rusted. No major accidents either.

My plans for the future include:

*2003+ front end swap with fogs or 2002 R/T
*2003+ rear end or nothing lol
*2003+ steering wheel swap
*rear view mirror with temp and compass
*new paint
*remove dents.

All comments are welcome. I am not here to spam or be useless. Also, any advice is also welcomed. Thanks and hopefully someone here can understand what I meant up above. lol

Here is the build sheet of my car. Figured it might be useful. lol

Also my motor

New and shiny lol

Image

THe previous owner replaced it because cylinder 3 lost compression. Something with one of the valves? I don't remember.

Interior:

Also, this is my reason for a front end swap. lol

Image

PS: The hood is popped. It is not out of alignment. Sorry for the phone pics. lol. Can't find my camera atm.

It is not a lot of damage, but it is enough to bother me. I kinda like the 2003 front with fogs a small amount better, but if I could find a 2002 R/T bumper.... then I would also be happy. lol

Can't find anything on the internet about it. But IMO is might have to do with what area it was supposed to be sent to. (i.e. was it intended to be shipped to Florida or some other tropical area like that, when it was first built).
Drove my neon until it was killed in a flood.

Welcome to the site ... yeah you will find a lot of info here. Yours really does not look all that bad for $300 ...

I was also a hater way back when. One of my ex's had the plymouth neon and I hated that car. But 2 years ago "my now ex" and I went looking for a 2nd car. We came across an 05 sxt ... looked at it and it had a few issues ... but talked the guy down from 4k to 3100. We shared driving is ... since I needed it for driving an hour one way for night school. After about a year of slow highway speeds ... but fun driving ... I decided to look into the Srt. I had her pay me the price I paid for the sxt ... and took that to use as a down payment for an Srt-4. Now she and the sxt are gone ... but I have my Srt-4 ... and a few new girls ... lol.

Not a Neon hater anymore ... but when I race ... I make more Neon haters all over the place ... LMAO :gears:

Hey, silly question, but is there a way to pull the passenger side headlignt without pulling the bumper? I know It is pretty easy on 2000-2001 and 2003-2005.... buuuutttt..... 2002 seems to be a b****. Lol.

Welcome! $300 is a steal for that car. Looks like it's got a nice set of snowflake wheels.

I'm betting that tropical option is just a recalibration of the ECU to deal with higher humidity. I've heard of OEMs doing that for regional tunes on vehicles.

Also, I found that I could remove my 02's lights by unscrewing the grill and the two screws on the bumper to the core support on either side of the grill. A little flexing and persuasion, and they slip out.

the Geo Metro!!! LOL...

JUST KIDDING!!! Shoot me NOW!!!

but being serious now... Real Favorites Below.

My first car was a 1991 Nissan 300zx (z32) Twin Turbo. Pearl white with 5 speed gearbox. I still have it. Not stock.

I love the Nissan 240sx (s13 hatch) platform. Owned 2 or 3 of those things.

I had a 2003 Acura CL Type S with the 6 speed. Supercharged. Was murdered by a F150. Sad day.

I also still have a 1995 Chevy Cavalier Z24 with a couple of mods. 5 speed. It is at the bottom of the list of favorites, but It has never let me down yet. I know I will get bashed for the Chevy. lol.
