Exhaust newb here

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Exhaust newb here

Post by tniemuth95 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 7:43 pm

Hey guys. I'd like to start off saying that my car is a 2000 atx neon with no major mods (CAI, wire set, etc...)

I'm looking for a new exhaust soon and I know NOTHING about exhaust systems. I am definitely not going to be putting a fart blaster muffler on my car but I am looking for some more noise. I do NOT want a loud car that you can hear from a mile away; what I'm looking for is a nice low, deep, grumble. I have a friend who has a grand prix GXP that sounds like a boat and it's freaking sweet, especially when he first turns the engine over. Obviously an I4 isn't gonna sound like a V8 but what are my options? I'll probably do something cat-back. Should I swap in an SRT exhaust? Don't those not have mufflers? Should I ditch the muffler and get a resonator? R/T exhaust? The exhaust system is one of the few things I know nothing about and unfortunately there is no sub-forum here.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

What exactly should I be looking at? Just a muffler? Cat-back system? Like I said i know little to nothing about exhaust systems.

Grand Prix' were v6. I went with an SRT axle back on my SXT and enjoyed the rumble. Until I started getting tickets. No need to replace cat or mid pipe with SRT exhaust, I can't remember if it's because they're the same size or if there's just no performance gain without decent intake mods.

ETA: And for the price, roughly $100 back then, you can't beat the price for the sound you want in a slip on package.

Scratch any reference to an SRT cat back/rear section, unless you add the turbo to go with it.

You will need a chambered muffler rear section if you are only looking for a low rumble that is civilized.

My 1gn has a Magnaflow DOHC muffler on it.

While I haven't yet street driven this car, even that without an additional resonator might be a bit loud. It sounds good at idle, but does get a bit raspy when revved. This is with a mid length PT header.

It is louder than my '01 with an R/T header/resonator/Walker Quiet Flow Camaro V6 muffler.

("Quiet Flow" is a questionable name  )

In general think 2-1/2 inch cat back with a high flow catalytic converter which uses a metal substrate (NOT CERAMIC!) with approximately 300 cels (think honeycomb sections) get a decent set of headers too. all of this should be stainless steel too. You can get all of this on ebay for as little as $300 new depending on the seller and the manufacturer. ( GET LOCKING HEADER BOLTS!) once this is all installed get it dyno'd to maximize the HP output since all of this may cause the computer to react and make the car run sluggish. If you don't like the sound you can always change the muffler itself to a magnaflow or flowmaster, or even a borla. Still don't like the sound try adding a resonator to the system as well. It should cost in the $700 - $1000 range installed by professionals, Less if you do it yourself.

I don't see where locking header bolts are really needed. I've had my R/T header on for nearly 100,000 miles on the SE original cast manifold bolts, and they have yet to loosen up. They even have antiseize applied. ;)

In general header bolts are known to loosen up especially within the first couple of weeks so unless he is a mechanic it might be a good idea. I guess I didn't need to shout it tho.

Just search for Camaro mufflers on their web site. Mid eighties to early nineties IIRC.

I'm sure the PN is floating around here somewhere also.

The outlet pipes you can have welded to the correct width for which ever rear fascia you go with. R/T and SRT have different spacing, in case you weren't aware.

If I had to do it over again, I would probably do an SRT4 rear section, but replace the resonators in the mid section with a couple of the Moroso inline mufflers. Don't do just the SRT exhaust. It's does a great job at not coloring the sound of the motor much, but it sounds like you want all of the rumble but none of the bumble.

I have the Dynomax Turbo Camaro muffler on my car and I love it. Not too loud...nice deep tone.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Probably close to the Walker Quiet Flow I have. Both are made by the same company. Quiet maybe on a Camaro with all the factory exhaust components intact. It is much quieter than an SRT rear section tho.

FWIW, the Quiet Flow PN for a neon: 40250 Single outlet, not R/T direct fit.

SoundFX 18896 - cheaper/louder

Camaro Muffler dual outlet

V6: 22253 2.25 inlet 2.00 outlets even SoundFX: 18232
V8: 22534 2.5 inlet 2.25 outlets offset SoundFX: 18375

http://www.walkerexhaust.com/products/mufflers.asp

Dyno Max: Retarded site. Only gives the complete system number now, and not the individual parts. Fail.

The 22253 is the muffler I am using. (Mid Eighties Camaro.) TruBenz stainless 2.25 neon pipes.

Do you have the part number? For that price, it should be 100% stainless construction. The regular direct fit Dyno Max mufflers last about 2 to 4 years, depending on use. I have used them in the past, so this is personal experience. Not just blowing smoke out my butt. They are better than PaceSetter mufflers by a long shot tho. Anything cat back I have bought from PaceSetter lasted less than a year.

The Walker PN for that muffler is only $93
Part # 21290

I would shop around a bit. The Walker I have was only $78, IIRC. Walker basically makes the Dyno Max series.

The outer shell on it is kinda flapping a bit, but the inner one is still intact.

This is daily use, in rust belt conditions. For a weekend nice weather car, you would probably get better results. Unless you drive 10 miles and park it.
