2004 R/T mod suggestions?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

2004 R/T mod suggestions?

Post by silversport » Thu Aug 23, 2012 7:56 pm

So I just bought a 04 R/T 5 speed and I was wondering what you guys think are the appropriate mods to make the most power out of this thing. NOTE: no turbo, no nitrous, and no cam swap. bolt ons only. Im looking for specific brands and sizes. IE MPX 60mm TB.

I was thinking. iceman intake, bored stock TB to 55mm (is 60 better?) unorthodox UDP, kirk LTH, a 2.5" pacesetter catback, srt ecu with diablo sport custom tune. I guess my biggest concerns are what TB size to go with and is a full 2.5" exhaust with a LTH going to do more harm than good? Thanks guys!

BC coilovers, hotchkiss or ST swaybars, STB's doesn't matter what brand, prothane bushings, light weight wheels, good tires. why do you want more power but no turbo, nitrous, or even a cam? so my suggestion is to make it more fun to drive if you can't have speed.

Agreed, Zach. Suspension mods go a lot further than engine mods for the dollar in our cars unless you go F/I. For a couple grand, you have a car that can carve canyons with the best of them, or you can drop a couple grand on bolt-ons that will result in a little more noise, and a lot more disappointment.

If you think your car is slow now, just imagine how much slower it will feel when it's making the same HP and your bank account is empty.

Haha so with the mods I suggested you guys are saying on a dyno Id see no extra WHP gain over stock. I agree suspension, tires and wheels are important and I am upgrading those as well. I was just wondering engine wise what can be done to add power to these RTs. I don`t think my car is slow, I just want to know that at the track if I pull up beside an SI or SIR I can take it lol

If you don't wanna throw boost or spray at it, you need to keep going and spend lots on some higher compression and a nasty cam too. The rest will yield maybe 15whp all put together. 1psi of boost would do that.

Haha ok point taken. Once I get my 66 mustang sold and have some more cash maybe I will have to come talk to you about a low boost application LOL

And to add, you cannot bore the stock TB.

Well you could try, but it would be a huge fail. They are plastic, and have a special coating to help air flow. Boring it, with what little material you have to work with, would create a rougher surface, with only a few millimeter more bore, that would likely flow less CFM.

Also, the MAP/TPS correlation code with the 60mm TB is hit/miss. A risky thing to spend the $ for a bolt on, ready to go TB, that might give you headaches.

Do you sell full turbo kits for SOHCs Eric?

The extra money you add to squeeze out a few measly HP could be put towards an SRT-4. At least around here, they're really not expensive.

He's already had an SRT and the R/T is way better on fuel than an SRT ever will be.

And with the right bolt ons and a good tune, you could easily pick up 20-25hp over stock, making for a nice, fun, reliable DD.
