crash ratings

Post by gcretro » Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:52 pm

Just came across crash test ratings for the gen2 neon, almost everything was marginal or poor.

Whats the opinions here?

After viewing pics from 2GN members of Neons that were rolled or hit deer, I'm not too worried about crash test results.

Like I've always said, they never got past the stigma of the 1gn's.

And probably most of that was driver error.

My own opinion ?

The 2nd gen Neon, is superior to the 1st gen, in this regard.
That is all. :|

bah its all relative. Once test is 4 of 5 stars. others "Good" for head and chest. then a new test/standard comes out and its now *suddenly* a death trap? Keep looking until you find a test result that you like? It was fine then its fine now IMO.

IMO "safty ratings" is in the same category as "quality". Its a subjective trait that people try to define objectively, but really means quite different things to different people.

Seriously I dont base my car purchase based on worst case safety scenarios like plowing head first at speed into a bridge support. Drive safe/be safe.

I understand. Just wanted to ask if there was any known / really bad things around crash safety on the 2 gen.

In the end, it depends on what you hit/what hits you, and what velocity the impact occurs at. After seeing an F150 broadside an XJ Jeep, I'll never really feel safe in my Cherokee. (Not that I took it for granted to begin with.)

Woman pulls out in front of a pick up doing 55 mph, passenger and driver doors are touching.

And even if the car would remain intact, there is no guarantee the occupants will.

Something has to give. It is either you, the vehicle, or how much "protection" you can afford. (Your wallet)

Yea, don't be in a neon or any small car if you plan to run into another car. You will probably lose and it won't feel good.

They're better than the 1st gen, but that wasn't hard to achieve in the first place.

My opinion? The 2gn is not a very safe car.
One look in my R/T's hollow door confirmed most of the ratings.

Meh. Who cares. If you want a safe car that has high crash ratings, buy a giant bubble to put around your car.

Meh, look at it this way: Every time you get in your car, with the intention of operating it on a public roadway, you are skirting attempted suicide. You are knowingly putting yourself in harm's way.

Or you can keep your head in the sand, and think w/e you buy is going to save your ass.

Weld in subframe connectors.

Put some solid steel bars across the interior behind the front seats (this pretty much eliminates rear seat legroom). Like a roll bar but with horizontal pipes also. Leave room for the seat to recline.

Try to weld in some cross bars under the floor pan.

This won't bulletproof the car, but it ought to help a bit.

Or you can go with a bolt in roll cage.

And unless you wear a helmet every time you drive, you put yourself at risk for a massive head injury from a minor accident.

Just buy a Toyota. They're the magical perfect cars that nothing ever goes wrong with. Consumer Reports told me so!
