torque specs and torque sequence's

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

torque specs and torque sequence's

Post by XxWhiteNeonxX » Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:05 pm

As the title states, im looking for torque specs and torque sequence's.

Its a 96 dohc 2.0L motor..

I need:

Torque sequence for the head studs
Torque sequence for the oil pump ( if there is any)
Torque sequence for the main studs

Torque specs on the arp head studs
Torque specs on the arp main studs
Torque specs on the oil pump

And clearences for the main bearings. How much clearance is ok and what isnt ok ?

I don't remember main studs off hand, but the head studs are as follows if you are reading them like a book from in front of the car:
3, 8, 7, 2, 4, 9, 6, 1, 5, 10.
I imagine the main studs are similar. But the key is to get them snug with just a little torque in that pattern. (Probably just enough to crush the gasket) and then torque them down to spec. DO NOT exceed the spec though. The bolts are designed to almost exactly reach the limit of the elastic range at spec, and if you exceed it by even 5 ft/lb, you risk going into the plastic range, where the bolt stretches, loses strength, and risks damaging the motor in all kinds of different ways.
ASP - First NGC SOHC in the 13s and the 12s. First SOHC neon over 500whp. First NGC Neon on MS.

Ok, thanks for the info man. Not sure if you got my text or not, but the machine shop quoted me 3 grand to assemble my motor. I said screw that, and now im doing it myself. Its not a matter of being able to or not, its just i have more money than time, so id rather pay somebody to do it.

Wow, come over this way, and I'll do it for beer. No warranty on the work though if I drink the beer first.

Do you not have the '04 PDF FSM that circulates the web?

The 2.0 bottom end specs should be basically the same, all in all.

IDK about the head, but probably the same sequences, as they are interchangeable 100%; as far as bolting on.

i have all the torque sequences now... Now im just looking for torque specs. I do not have the manual. Like i said, the motor is a 96 dohc. I have the regular specs, but im not sure if arps are torqued a little different or not.

Yeah, I can't see studs being TTY like head bolts, etc.

A few threads I found searching:

viewtopic.php?t=20552

They are both related to SOHC tho.

End Play
0.09-0.27 mm/ 0.0035-0.0106in.
Wear Limit 0.37 mm/ 0.015 in.

Main Bearing Diametrical Clearance 0.022-0.062mm / 0.0008-0.0024 in.

IIRC, the wear limit is .003"

These are pretty tight compared to the older engines. I ran .003" on the rods and .005" on the mains in my 383 without issue.

is there anyway to confirm that wear limit?
and obviously since all 2.0L's used the same crankshaft, they all use the same specs?

I would have to look in my FSM when I get home. Those are the specs from the PDF FSM, and it doesn't show the wear limit.

I imagine different diameter journals have different clearances. Probably proportionate to the size. .0008" would be a bit snug for a 5" diameter journal per say.

FWIW:

to make a long story short, im putting in arp main studs and i just want to check the clearance to make sure it didnt tighten up..

So, .003 is the number im looking to use, correct?
