Brake pads beveled near edge?

Post by yellowpatrol » Sat Sep 08, 2012 1:04 pm

I can't remember if they were like this when I bought them, I'm thinking almost definitely not. What do you think, are they rubbing on the edge of the rotor?

Beveled ? Yes, they are supposed to be that way.

:withstupid:

What I am more worried about is the condition of the slider pin boot  You want to replace that.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Yup, that's how they all are. if you have some noise issues I've been told to bevel the other edges with a file

Yeah I think I manhandled it too much trying to blindly line up the bolt :tardbang:

Is it a big deal?

I'm trying to track down the source of vibration when braking. Pads look like they have plenty of life. What they hell could it be?

You may as well fix the slider pin boot Now, while everything is apart.
Moisture will get inside the slider and cause corrosion, which will cause the slider pin to bind - affecting braking.

What is the condition of the rotors ? Are they 'true', or do they have any 'warpage' ?

What he said...again

On a Neon, nearly all cases of braking vibration is attributed to warped rotors. You may be able to have them turned true if they haven't been turned before.

I didn't really think the rotors looked too bad but they're so cheap I guess I could start there.

You really can't tell by looking at them. Do this...

Mount the calipers back on and bolt the rotors to the hubs without the wheel on. It doesn't have to be super tight, but use all the lugnuts to make sure the rotor is on straight. Put the car in neutral, and spin the rotors. Watch the gap between the outer pad and the rotor. Does it change as it rotates? If so, warped rotors.

Is that a normal amount of rust? Mine are usually just dirty with brake dust.

Don't know, I'm in the Midwest so I drive through all sorts of salts and chemicals when it's icy out. Probably the cause.

So update- replaced the rotors and it's smooth as butter now. Woo hoo

if they are that bad, I'd change them. $50 for a pair is cheap insurance.
