Header question

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Header question

Post by unleashedcc » Thu Sep 13, 2012 9:14 pm

I've been looking but I cannot find it. As of now, I have a KIRK long tube header on my regular SOHC. I might buy a Magnum head soon and I was wondering if it will bolt up.

I understand is better if I have the magnum header, but I'm tight in money. I just want to make sure after I do the swap, I won't be stuck.

It will bolt up, but the issue is if the header ports are as big as the magnum's ports. Unless someone knows the ID of the Kirk, you will have to measure it.

I don't think so. I believe the KIRK header ports will be smaller than the Magnum head. Will it matter? At least until I get a new header to match the Magnum head.

Also, will it really make that big of a difference on a automatic? I have 60MM tb, UDP, working magnum IM, cai, full cat-less exhaust, granatelli ingnition.

It will work, but you may lose a bit of power from the step created. Maybe less power than the regular head, depending on how large the lip is.

A shorty header might be a better choice with an ATX anyways. Maybe look for a used Magnum, or an OBX.

Hopefully the gasket will seal adequately, or you may have some weird issues with the o2 freaking out from the leak.

A good port job on the SE head, and a shorty header would probably compliment the 41te better, for all around driving. You would be amazed at how choked off the exhaust ports are under the valves.

I put my ported SE head into my daughter's 1gn 3 speed. She really doesn't know it has been ported, but I think she is pretty happy with it. It even gets better fuel mileage now.

I didn't remove the humps, but just opened up the bowl area, and smoothed things out. The humps help direct the flow, and maintain velocity.

Well to be honest I don't really want a FASSSST car. I just want it to have enough response. I do understand that the best thing would be an SRT or a MTX swap. My biggest issue is labor. I live in Chicago now and the car is in Florida. If I were to find someone with a cheap donor car or someone with everything I would need for a MTX swap and labor I would do it.

Although at times I wish I could just buy a new unmolested 02 RT and start all over. But again, no room here in this apt complex so I'm stuck. I'll settle with just dreaming.

I still have to replace the p.steering rack, inside speakers, shocks, tints and alternator.

My above post will no way make it a fast car, but it will help make a little more torque.

On that head, I didn't do much with the intake side, just the exhaust. The intake ports were perfectly matched to a Magnum IM gasket as cast. (Far better than the Magnum head I bought)

Obviously in your situation, you would need to get a head already ported, if the opportunity arrived. Your neighbors may not like the sound of a Dremel for a few hours.

If I had absolutely nowhere to work on my car, I would go nuts. :)

what is the ID of the primaries on your Kirk header? the OEM magnum ex mani is 1 5/8ths and is WAY larger than the ports. 1.5" ID would probably fit just right. might lose a couple HP on the extream top end but you should gain a ton through the midrange.

I will check. The only problem I have is that when I had the exhaust put in, they welded the lth to a flex pipe and flex pipe to a catless exhaust, and I would have to start chopping the exhaust and welding it back together but we will have to see

Well I called Modern and since they don't sell the KIRK for the regular sohc anymore, they can't tell me the size but I would imagine it would be slightly biggar than the stock size.
