Picking up another 2g today!

Found this little gem on craigslist for $1000.

2003 SXT ATX 130k miles
Was a theft recovery so the ignition and sentry ring are destroyed. Only body flaws are the dented fender/door and a cut in the bumper, otherwise its in great shape (hopefully the motor/trans are too). Interior is trashed but plenty of things at the junkyard to grab to make it all newish.

Best of all its less than 1/2" mile from my house so I'm just gonna try and tow it with the Subaru with dvon17's help.

I don't really need another 2g (even tho this one is in better condition body wise than my red 2g project, but the girlfriend could use her own car so why not.

No clue. The seller got from a storage auction. So he has very little information about it but it has a clear title.

I gotta matching skim/pcm/chipped key for an 04 atx Ikd let go for cheap. The key is broken off though.

Towed it home with the Subaru :D

Going to the junkyard tomorrow to grab a new ignition cylinder and door/trunk cylinder so that I can atleast lock the car while it's in my backyard. Tried to see if it would run but couldn't gettin to fire up, hoping it's due to the sentry being all jacked. Still wondering how it was stolen.. I cant get to run lol but atleast the timing belt isnt broke. Its looks like they popped the door lock and then destroyed the ignition lock.

It was running fine under Subie power. :lol:


Looks like the tried to remove the entire door. Did it take a light hit to the front, and the door/fender got munched when the door was opened? I was trying to figure out how they drove it away myself.

Unless they simply hacked the column, and plugged in MS. About the only way. But you would think if they were that savvy, they could do it without destroying everything else.


If they did use the MS method, too bad it isn't still attached. :D


(FWIW, I seen this method on television to jack a Chevy truck. IDK that it was MS, but they basically wrenched the ign, plugged in their PCM, and drove off. )

off to the junkyard with dvon17 to see about finding some keys/skim module and lock cylinders.. found keyless entry fob/brain at the junkyard last time for my red 2g.. hopefully we can find a whole set of locks.

Got a used skim and ignition key/cylinder. Swapped the circuit board from the broken skim into a good housing. Just need to get a key programmed and use the drb3 to unlock the theft lockout

The DRB won't override the lockout, but you can get it out of lockout yourself. With the key in the ignition and turned to "On", leave the drivers door open for one hour. Be sure to hook up a charger to the battery so the voltage doesn't drop below 12V. After an hour you will have reset the lockout. We had to do this in the shop if the SKIM they programmed was wrong.

You will need the DRB to program the key though. Eh, it's still good to know.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Um, how'd you swap the circuit board? Did you unsolder the 2 connections that go through the "ring", which is actually the antenna.

Ah ok, cuz I tried swapping a set at the junkyard and figured that out, and said screw it. Once clip was broken holding the halves together or something.

I didn't care about the original housing since it was busted, so I broke them tabs :P but i was able to open the housing i was swapping the original board into without breaking a single tab, not even the PCB tabs that hold the circuit board down!

So pretty much all I need is to buy a transponder key, get it cut to match the new cylinders I got from the junkyard and borrow a DRB to program the key.

FYI 2g Stratus/Sebring locks are identical, except for the trunk.. smh

I have a 2nd gen parts car. if you want some lock cylinders. Also, alpinegreenneon can cut keys for you on the .org. Also can get blank skim keys and cut them to whatever your cylinders are, and can re-do all the cylinders to match. Send him a PM, prices are very reasonable.

Thanks for the info, I sent him a PM. I already got new (used) cylinders just need the trunk rekeyed to match the new locks.

Got some new carpets today at the junk yard. Also a few lock sets and some misc parts. Car looks 1000% better inside than when i got it. Previous owner litterally dumped soda pop all over the place along with putting their cigarettes out on pretty much everything.
Really wish i had a before picture cause its so much better looking now. Since i got SRT seats for the 02 i put the stock seats from that in this one. The seats were horrid. Straight to the trash theyre going.

I thought it would be possible to hot-wire the ASD relay and force the car to run, but I could be wrong.

Nope. My sister's '04 had a broken wire from the PCM to the ASD relay (the control wire). It wouldn't start even with the ASD relay jumpered. No spark/fuel pulse but the fuel pump ran while cranking.

Remember, the PCM turns on the ASD relay when it decides everything is there for the car to properly run. If it doesn't turn on the ASD relay, it's also not pulsing the coil or injectors.

Yep, it holds all the cards by controlling the ground path to the coil(s), and the injectors. All the ASD relay does is give them (+) power. The PCM grounds them in sequence to run the engine. No ground, in the proper order, no run.

Haha, even if it tries to apply the ground and you manually close the relay, no start. Which threw me for a loop and thought it was another input that was causing the problem.

Im thinking it was an insurance job. According to a lot of the papers left in the car the previous owner had money troubles. So i bet they drove it somewhere to dump, hacked up the column and tossed the keys.

Had my buddy come over with his DRB3 and got the new keys programmed, after nuking the belts (alt is seized) we got it running! but has a horrible rod knock :( added some oil but no change, the oil dummy light is on so idk if maybe the pick up is clogged or what.

I believe the car sat for 2 years, so I'm thinking maybe dropping the pan and seeing whats all gummed up in there. But I really dont want to have to build/swap a motor this winter especially since i have no room in my garages for this car so it would be a driveway job :( And finding a 03-05 motor at the junkyard isnt too common as the 95-02. Not going to do an SRT swap since its gonna be my girls car. decisions decisions..

I wouldn't think freight would be too horrible. It isn't like it would take a lot of space. As far as truck freight, I doubt the weight would mean much in relativity.

Might be getting a 03 R/T block for free. just waiting for the guy to tell me when and where to grab it :D
Gonna drop my 2.4 in the red 2g Wednesday to free up my engine stand.
