seafoam in OIL?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

seafoam in OIL?

Post by gcretro » Tue Oct 09, 2012 2:28 pm

04 Neon 116 K miles. I have sea-foamed it 15 K miles back.

No issues. I do have a slight drip leak on the oil pan gasket.

I am eager to run some seafoam in the motor oil for 5-7 minutes before the next oil change.

Is this a risky stunt?

From what I've heard YES.. sea foam breaks the oil down. A lot of people say just to put it through the brake booster and thats it

Just before changing it won't hurt. Probably won't do much either, other than making the oil drain better.

The risk is if the engine were severely sludged, it would break enough loose to clog the oil pick up, and/or suck what can get through the pick up screen into the oil pump.

The safest way to clean gunk out, other than doing a tear down, and hot tanking, is to change the oil a bit more often. Next would be to add some ATF a few miles before an oil change. I have never had a problem with using ATF, no more than a quart tho.

I have used it to quick flush an engine, just idling for a bit, and draining. ATF is a bit pricey nowadays for that tho. I would use a cheap off brand oil for that now.

For baked on varnish, it will take a long time, to never to disappear.

The key is, the slower the better. that way the nasty stuff is kept in suspension, and caught in the oil filter.

Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.
