Air filter

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Air filter

Post by TomsNeon » Fri Oct 19, 2012 3:10 pm

As usual, questions, questions, questions LOL!

This time, which air filter is "better" than another and why is K&N so highly recommended, even in a stock setup? I ask because I'll need one soon when it's tune up time and I got the car not too long ago.....I have been told to remove resonator box, optional to replace bellows tube with steel tube, add a K&N filter and then I'd have a make-shift CAI with the stock parts which is fine - thank you Jeff and occasional demons!! - since $ is an issue. So why is K&N so highly recommended? What's wrong with the huge Fram air filter in the airbox now? Again, just asking so please inform the ignorant. Thanks all!

The real advantage that the K&N has, is it can be cleaned, re oiled and reused. Eventually it will pay for it's self. Since fund's are tight, I would just stick with the conventional filter, if you aren't going with the fender mount CAI.

If it is in an area that will get water hitting it occasionally, then a cotton/oil filter has the upper hand. The water will either roll off, or if sucked through (this is not referring to a submerged scenario) it will be broken into small harmless droplets. A paper filter will soak in the moisture, and severely restrict air flow.

Again, buying it for a performance/fuel mileage gain alone will take a lot of miles to come ahead. To be honest, going with a K&N on my 4.0 Jeep made no difference at all.

In reality, a new clean paper filter will probably flow more CFM than the stock TB.

As bill mentioned the kn filter can be reused. Between all the vehicles im using 4 kn filters.
On my 4.0 jeep I noticed a performance gain but I put the filter on with a larger tb n tb spacer n new intake
On my mr2 im using n oem replacement kn n I dont notice any differance
