oil light dings every 5-25seconds or so, random, no leaks

oil light dings every 5-25seconds or so, random, no leaks

Post by cgneon » Sat Nov 10, 2012 6:02 pm

like i said, oil light started dinging today, every 5-20seconds, while driving, at lights, etc.. stopped to check level, i just had an oil change a month ago, and i do not drive far, so less then 100miles since change. oil level is fine, no leaks, maybe a little too high, but i checked it hot. 2001 with 74k on car/motor. got me baffled, no differenc ein driving performance, just constant dinging, no codes no check engine lights. my scanguage shows no problems after scan.

what gives?

thanks!

Others (myself included) have had mysterious "dings" (chimes) sound like this every so often and have been puzzled as to why.

can too much oil cause that oil light to come on? like i said, just had oil change recently, and checked the level cold this morning and the level was well above the X in the MAX lettering.

with as little as a i drive, finally getting a little trip in yesterday for 30-45min got me too much pressure?

Yeah, I kind of figured that. There had been discussion of random chimes sounding but the only threads I could find with Search were the ones that I posted. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. :banghead:

I'm having a similar issue: viewtopic.php?t=64078&highlight=oil+light

Also, when you checked your oil level, did you clean the dipstick and then put it back and check again? It looks like you just pulled it out in your pic.

replace your oil pressure switch... i have an 05 SRT ACR at the shop. oil light would stay on until the car warmed up then it shut off....replaced the switch and installed a pressure gauge just to be sure... 68psi at idle...

Yes, if the oil is high enough the crank will cause it to be whipped up into foam. Foaming oil does not give good pressure.

If as ThatKevin asked, it was as sitting for a few minutes, and wiped re inserted, then I would be reaming the oil change place.

Too much oil does not mean higher oil pressure. Like I stated above, if it is foaming, you are losing oil pressure. the pump is not getting 100% liquid.

yes it was cleaned and level rechecked before the pic was taken. car was sitting overnight and checked cold this morning.

Just ran to the grocery store, which was only a couple mile round trip and no ding, i was at low speed and low rpm the whole way.. seems higher rpms on main road did it, i will have to take it for a drive and get to temp today and see if it still does it.

whats a good way to get some excess oil out? siphon hose down the dipstick hole?

Just crack the drain plug open and let it come out slowly, holding onto the plug so that you can quickly tighten it when you're satisfied. Had to do this once when changing oil on the Audi. A lot simpler than having to fish out the oil through the dipstick tube.

^ This.

Of course if you have no way to reach under there, and have room for a drain pan...

If you took it somewhere, I would still take it back to them, have them drain it to the proper level, and give you paperwork stating that it was overfilled. While I doubt any damage has been caused, it never hurts to have something in writing from the lube place just in case.

Why should you go through the trouble to correct their mistake, when you paid them to do it right the first time?
