Rust in radiator

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

This doesn't sound very good.
I wonder what other rust is hiding elsewhere in the system.

I'd consider having a power back-flush done, by a good radiator shop.

Also, be ready to end up replacing the radiator, if necessary.
If the cooling system has never been maintained before, it might be time.

Tip:
Try to use only distilled water - along with Anti-freeze, of course - whenever possible.

Even if you don't go the shop route, almost expect to replace the radiator.

Swap the heater lines at the firewall to reverse flush the heater core. Be prepared to buy new rubber lines also. The heater core lines are plastic, so you will destroy them using pliers to remove the hoses. Carefully slit them with a razor if you cannot twist them loose by hand.

If you have the radiator out, replace the rubber lines to the hard lines at the water pump inlet, and the head.

My system is full of rust as well, my rad is okay, my main issue was the heater core being FULL of rust. I would suggest fliping the lines and after a week of having them flipped, flush the system to get all the loose crap out. I actually jammed my thermostat open with all the rust and debris that was stirred up from the heater core

Run Antifreeze in the recommended concentration, and change it regularly - since it will lose it's effectiveness as time goes by.
