Fuel leak. 2005 SXT

Post by Moparguy4 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 4:54 pm

I've been smelling gas for a while. Finally located it. It is the fitting that comes off the hard fuel line near the firewall. IT's l shaped with plastic tabs that look like it snaps onto the hard line.
Anyone know what it is? Having a hard time finding one in the auto parts places.
Thanks

Is the plastic fuel line just not sealing or did the lil white clip that holds the fuel line on break? Those lil white clips can be bought at most part stores. The fuel line can be replaced by sourcing from a dealer, junkyard, or you can go all out and make your own with a couple of quick release an fittings and some braided fuel line and correct an fittings.

I saw it drip out next to the white clip. I does't look broke but I didn't remove it either. It's under pressure so I didn't want to pull it off :) Didn't know how much would spray out and I don't have a clip to replace it yet.

I will stop for a clip for sure, if that doesn't fix it I guess it's fabrication time. Is the small round thing under the "L" a trap for sedament? Pretty sure it's not leaking out the rubber line but that trap or whatever it is is damp and dirty.

Is this it?

Do you measure the OD of the hard line for size?

The little thing hanging on the hard line is like a cushion to dampen the fuel pump pulses. Yes those clips you linked up are the ones. I never measure, I usually remove what I have and take it with me. If you don't wanna make a mess and smell like gas. Run the car and pull the fuel pump relay while it's running. Let it die, then shut the ignition off. Remove fuel line and inspect.

The line is 5/16"

One of the o rings may have failed.

Keep in mind that fitting is dangerously close to the very hot catalytic convertor, this can happen:

Well, I had better luck helping my father in law put an exhaust on his 2010 Challenger R/T
The plastic clips were not broke so I opted to order a new line from Mopar. Figured it would just be a plug and play type of thing. Well I took off the old one, wiped all the dirt off the line plugged in the new one and it still leaks. :banghead:

Is the fuel line actually plastic coated aluminum or is it just plastic? If I replace the line with braided line or something similiar does it matter if the dampener is not there? How would you go about connecting to the plastic line? Can you use a compression fitting? The fuel rail has a nice lead in chamfer the hard line has sharp corners, my luck I scratched the oring...

*Canada * that is what I am worried about. Right now it just drips every once in a while but I don't want to drive it too much for that fear.

When I said to replace the line with braided I meant the plastic line from the hard line to the rail. Don't replace your hard line unless it's leaking and rusted. My 1st gen hard line is rusted badly so I am replacing it all with Russell twist lock hose and AN fittings to a modified fuel pump canister.

That is all I was going to replace was from the hard line to the fuel rail. I'm not seeing any connectors other than the stock style. I'll keep looking around.

So you replaced the plastic line that goes across the engine: fuel rail to the line at the firewall?

Possibly the line at the firewall is slightly damaged. As in out of round.

You can purchase repair ends, but you would need to either use a compression fitting, or preferably, flare with a brake line tool and use a brake union to connect the repair end. A compression fitting might be more than adequate, but I still don't trust them when fuel is in the equation.

That is how I did my 1gn fuel line from the tank to the firewall, except I used copper line between the repair ends. One at the FP module, and one at the firewall. You just need a good double flare tool, two 5/16 tubing nuts and a brake line union. IIRC, AZ sells the repair end in one piece, that you will have to cut into two. It has the crimp on both ends.

I must have just jacked up the o-ring when I put it on. I got the repair ends from Dorman part number 800-081 put it on and it is fine now. The only problem is I had to cut off the fuel dampener in the process. I think it will work till after Christmas. I will buy another replacement through Chrysler. I got the last one out of the Chicago warehouse as it was and I messed it up :banghead:

With fuel I want to just be safe and go with factory. Thanks for the help guys. Sorry, I was a little frustrated eariler.

You can get a fuel rail with a dampener from a 1gn at a junkyard. That'll probably be the easiest solution.

Believe it or not, two mounting points were melted slightly, and the obvious burn damage...

But, when I found it in the wrecking yard several months later, it was removed and gone!
